My 65G Shallow Reef Tank

Thanks Bulent.

both the copiosa and valenciennesi are from protected environments. Perhaps this explains why my coral does not like to encrust much? I have it in a lot of flow, I wonder if that's part of the reason it appears stressed. It was in better shape when infested with red-like bugs.

Thanks for your advice Jim. Do you have a tank thread, so that I can have a look at your sunset millie? What is "PC" stand for? I am not very conversant with abbreviations and common names for corals.
"PC" stands for Pro Corals and was a short-lived company started by Sonny Harajly. He used to be a member of RC (SunnyX), but I believe that he has been out of reefing for a number of years. His sunset millie is mostly yellow with peach coralites. I'll see if I can dig up an image for you. There's a reasonable shot of it on the Battle Corals web site. Unfortunately, I do not have a tank thread yet and might have to start one to document my disaster of a reef:lol2:............................Jim

Thanks Jim.

I have ordered two frags in the end. One sunrise millepora as already discussed and one red planet. Both frags will have lots of flow and plenty of light. They should hopefully thrive in my tank.

Thanks Bulent.

Mark,

My acropora copiosa did not encrust either. In fact, none of my staghorns did not encrust their bases. They tend to grow vertically and then spread horizontally through their branches.

Nice purchases!
Both pieces have high bling potential.
Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on them, Bulent.

Thank you Matt. I will do my best.

On a separate note, I think I have run out of luck with my Genicanthus angels. Lamarck female has suddenly turned on my female G. melanospilos. Poor fish has been on hiding and only comes out in the dark. What should I do? Should I wait a bit to see if the quarrel between the two fish will go away or remove one of them? If I must remove one of them, should I remove the bully or bullied?

Thanks in anticipation.

That's too bad!
I forget how many dwarf angels you have in the tank..
Could be a territory issue.. Sounds to me like one is maturing and setting up a breeding area which doesn't include the other..
I can't see how the situation would get better.. maybe feeding more might help but won't help thenbalance in the tank.
If ultimately necessary I'd remove the one you like the least..

Hi Matt,

I do not have any dwarf angels. I have angelfish of the genus Genicanthus.

Things have settled down between the two large female angels for now. So there is no need to remove any of them.

Having lost two female G. watanabei in the past due to jumping (as a result of aggression) in the past. I ordered a really small G. watanabei over a year ago. Retailers in the UK usually source large specimen of about 3-5". Anything over 2" is a bad news because the alpha females will not tolerate it. Having waited for so long, I received a phone call from my lfs last week about the arrival of what they termed as the smallest watanabei they ever sourced. They were not kidding. The female watanabei I fetched is about 1.5"-long excluding her tail.

Upon her introduction, the largest alpha female G. lamarck bullied her for about an hour. After that she completely ignored her. She is quite skinny, but has started to eat eagerly. So she should get fat within a few months.

Deforestation continues, but is coming to an end. I have recently noticed that my Montipora setosa colony was getting too close the front glass and silicone on the bottom glass. I had to chop it mercilessly. May God forgive me for that?

On a more cheerful note, my new so-called "sun rise" millepora frag arrived earlier this week, but to my annoyance the retailer did not send my Red Planet frag :angry fire: because he had already sold it to someone else. Nevermind. The consolation was that I was able to purchase so-called "bali short cake" a few days later:

https://reefworks.co.uk/shop/bali-shorcake/

This coral is a form of Acropora latistella. It seems to look very similar to "pink lemonade". Do you think "pink lemonade" is A. latistella?

Every time I see a bali shortcake, I want one!
Merry Christmas Bulent.
How are the new fish and corals doing?

You take your deforestation very seriously.

I look forward to seeing the new pieces soon.

My wife calls me Mr serious as I take everything I do very seriously. :spin1:

Merry Christmas Matt.

I have mixed news on fish. The new fish has settled in well. It is feeding really well. With this rate, she should start to look fat.

My female G. melanospilos is constantly on hiding though she attempts to eat during feeding. If she starts to lose weight, I will take her to my lfs.

The worst news is that my file fish died a few days ago. It stopped feeding last week and started to hide. I had it for about two years in my tank. Prior to coming to my tank, it lived about one year in my friend's tank.

Aiptasia has already started to re-colonise my tank. I am getting two small file fish in the next few days.

As for my new frags, they need to settle in well before showing their potential.

That Millie is going to be a stunner some day. I love any Acro's with hairy, long, or generally crazy polyps. :)

That sure is a cute little watanabei!

Sorry you lost your filefish. That's a fish I've always wanted but never had for some reason. Best of luck with the two new ones you have coming.

Nice little watanabei!
I have always called the genicanthus angels dwarf angels simply because they don't grow as large as most marine angels.. I guess it's a misnomer..
The frags look really good. The Millie is already as hairy as a tree hugger at Burning Man! :) and the Bali shortcake looks good as well. Very curious to see it in a month or two.
That's too bad about the filefish. They can be tough as nails or not.. but I guess like any living creature, sometimes they just get something and that is that.
My filefish, after beginning to eat acro polyps, has lived for a couple years in my sump feeding exclusively on copepods that grow in the cheato.. however, since my cheato does not grow anymore I will have to relocate him to an aptasia full and acro free tank.
I have the perfect tank for him, actually..
How long have you had those feather duster worms and do feed them anything in particular?

Thank you for your well wishes.

I like the expression "as hairy as a tree hugger at Burning Man!". I have never heard this before  for that.

My file fish was well behaved as far as coral polyps are concerned.

I have one giant feather duster worm and one coco worms. I have had the feather duster worm for more than two years and coco worm for over a year. NP-Bacto-Balance and KZ Sponge power provide the necessary food filter feeders. Furthermore, my silver belly wrasse stirs the sand bed quite regularly. Having said that I have lost two coco worms in the past two years. So, my track record for keeping these animals is not impressive.

Here are some top-down photos I took last night. The only coral I am struggling at present is ice/fire. Since I removed it from its normal spot a few weeks ago, it has been suffering from STN. I think I am going to lose this coral.

Amazing top down shots bulent. I have issues with aiptasia too. I am still sitting outside the fence on whether I should introduce filefish or peppermints. I have some lps(zoas, acans) I might have to give up if I choose the filefish route. What a dilemma.

I had to give up all my lps and clams to accommodate my filefish. So I know how you feel.

In my experience, peppermints only work when there is no fish in your set up. This is because they need to be really hungry to eat aiptasia, which is not possible when you feed your fish. I have also observed that peppermints works as a pack. They also attacked the polyps of Pocillapora damicornis.

Filefish also nip at Acro polyps. Mine nipped at Acropora aspera when it was hungry, but did not cause any permanent damage.

Read your article in reef hobbyist magazine. It was great. How do you manage PO4. Could you share your nutrient export/control methods
