My 90 - first "real" reef - Pic Thread

I like the layout of your sump, but how do you "glue" those baffles into place?

I used aquarium sealant/silicon that I got from Home Depot. I must say that I am not very good with doing handywork. It was not too difficult though. I ultimately took out the baffle to the far right because my "glue" job was failing. It was only an extra baffle though to cut down on any excess microbubbles. That happened a week after I set it up though and the others have been fine for three months now.

Here are a few pictures of my corals. Feel free to correct me or give me the proper names of some of these. I am going by descriptions from the LFS I got them at for the most part, except for the ones from seacrop.com.

Green Leather from lfs. Also visible is my blue/ghreen mushroom form seacrop.com:

Bubble coral from lfs - I can't get cam to focus on this properly.

Green star polyps to left. There were only about 5 polyps when I got them a few weeks ago. Growing nicely. In the center of the pic is something I got from a local reefer for free. Not sure what it is lol. Grows FAST though. Anyone have a name?

Toadstool Leather, picture does not do this justice, very very nice coral.

Zoanthids and another leather. Also you can see my fish string handywork as I cut a piece of that coral from other side of tank and moved it here. If it works like last one, it should attach within 3-4 days and I then simply remove the string.

RBTA 2/mated percs. Just fed the rbta a silverside, it's still expanding back to full size. You can see my ever-curious six line wrasse sneaking into the picture.

You said that you needed to replace one of the MH bulbs in your lighting fixture b/c it was a differnt color than the other, why was this?
Was that supposed to happen when you purcashed it offline?

The MH bulbs with my fixture were free. Go to the link I provided earlier and read the description. I don't know why they were different colors but they were. Just cheap bulbs? Nonetheless, I replaced them both with new hamilton bulbs. :)

So if i ordered that set-up from offline though the bulbs would not be different colors, but they would be the bulbs as advertised?

And someone before was talking about how good tunze pumps are, can i get a link to a webpage on them, or just waht makes them so much betteR?

They were the same exact bulbs, both Odyssea 150W MH bulbs. After they burned in, they started putting out different shades of light. They are simply free cheap bulbs that they give you with the fixture. You can repalce them with any brand you like if you do not like them. Which is what I did.

I believe that is a Pulsing Xenia or maybe just regular Xenia. I have the same kind I believe. Mine has grown so much I'm getting scared. I think its definitly time to get the razor blade out.

Thanks necco.. In another thread, bertoni recommended a book called "Aquarium Corals" to me... I ordered it and should be getting it in next week. So maybe I will be a little more knowledgable after that heh...

I think that I may need that book as well Warboc. I'm still trying to figure out what everything is on my LR. I got another pic when my xenia was a baby in my 30g.

hey Warboc, i am also getting a 90g and plan to build my own sump as u did.

Did that design work out for you?
what are the dimensions of the sump?
and...

how far from the top are the baffles? and from the bottom?

The sump is is a 30 galon "tall" tank - 30in long, 12.5in wide 18.5in tall.

The intake and outtake sections on each end are 6 inches wide. Each of the baffles are 12.5 inches tall and are placed 1 inch apart. The center baffles are raised 1.5 inches, thus extending them 14 inches from the bottom.

This all works out to the center refugium being 13 long, by 12 tall, by 12.5 wide.

I hope that made sense! :)
