well its been about three months since my last update and I have to say that not much has happened, the tank has been on hold for a while so I could really take a look at the direction I wanted to go and save up a little cash. I decided to stick with my skimmer and design my sump around it.
I finally found someone that would make me a box for a decent price and as it turned out I was going to be in la this week for a dysneyland trip so I picked up a 24x18x16 acrylic sump with no baffles. I tried to explain what i wanted but it just never came out right and Im no artist so I decided I would try and add the baffles for the bubble trap and fuge on my own. First thing I needed to do is practice making overlfow teeth so I could have the fuge drain through them and not have any algae go over the edge. Heres a shot of what I started with
It was pretty obvious from my first few attempts that I was going to need some type of guide. The router was grabbing the sheet as the blade hit and throwing it off. I also didnt have a good grasp on how to space them evenly. Adam thought of a way to make holes in a piece of wood that were even spread at about 3/4" apart.
here you can see how sloding it from one hole to the next would give us an even spread of teeth
I have to say I was pretty happy with the end result, the teeth came out alot better than the trials. I am ready for some black acrylic or abs (thanks nathan) so I can start my fuge and finish up my sump. Here is what the teeth looked like once we were using the new custom frabricated DIY guide
Here are some pics of the sump with my skimer sitting in it and some tape to give ma an idea of what I am going to need for my baffles ect...
Tape is a little off but its just for a rough draft
