Leave it there are few days and see if colors start to come back. It's a very good light but you probably just dropped the PAR they're under by quite a lot.
So after a week of transferring some of the frags to the LED system, im not too thrilled with the changes. Im assuming there will be a long adjustment period. Ill be patient. Before/after.
The looks normal for the change in light type and level. You might want to raise the frags and lower the light. You'll inevitably get a different color to the frag as they adapt.
So as I was inspecting the frags under the LEDs pondering why the colors were fading, i found the dreaded Red Bugs... Or in my case brown bugs? Either way i am treating with Sentinel tonight. Its good timing as I just received my final shipment from Battle Corals and hopefully last purchase of frags. I will treat the tank 3 times in 3 weeks.
As expected, but im still very bummed, all hermits and crabs I couldnt remove have died overnight. I used a large Sentinel pill (23mg milbemycin oxime) for my approximate 200 gal system. The hermits I saved will be housed in a tub until i finish the treatments in 3 weeks. On a good note, the sps have responded positively with better PE today. I expect a nutrient spike and more nuisance algae in the coming weeks...
I also became weak and shut down the Razor Nano. The bad response by my sps was too fast and with the RB treatments, i just wanted things to be stable. So in its place I bought a Bimini 150 watt DE 10K from Hamilton Tech. Its doesnt have the fancy dimmer ability, but its bright and they are running a special for $159 for plug and play. I love it as it reminds me of the old days when 10K was the kelvin of choice. It does look more yellow in the pic than it actually is.
So here is an example of how Red Bugs affect sps. Before was taken a few months ago. After taken today. You can also see creeping hair algae after Sentinel treatment.
Thanks guys! Will try to share more of my ups and downs with pics. Im always so envious of those TOTM quality tanks and am working to get there... hopefully sometime this year.
I dont know about others, but my coralline algae grows fast. Even with all the sps frags, coralline is still out of control. I feel that if your tank cant grow coralline well, you probably cant grow sps well. Also, the 150DE 10K i have over my 25 gallon seems much brighter than my 250DE 14K with 4xT5 actinics. The Geisemann sits 12 inches above my waterline while the 150 sits 8 inches which might account for some difference along with tank size. I do know that the frags i moved to the 10K are reacting differently than under the 14K plus actinics.
Man this needs to be posted to the SPS section, I happened in here and your methodology and knowledge is far above average over there too! Such lovely pieces. I'm glad someone admits the sps graveyard exists!
Did you ever measure PAR from these two locations ?
Or are you attributing the better color, assuming you think the more pink is better color, to the color temp of the bulb ?
I stuck a Ponape under the edge of a rock, nearly shading it completely because it was so white, but growing, under 250 PAR. Within a month it's color increased tremendously. They apparently are pretty low light corals, IMO.
