My Anemone Likes Round Table Like Me!

Well I just got a new RBTA and I have read alot about how they like meaty foods. I have been trying to feed it Mysis and Krill but nothing seems to stick.

Tonight I got the new Ulti Meat pizza from Round Table and I thought to myself, I wonder if it would like a piece of sausage? The anemone has looked great ever since I put it in my tank but I wanted to feed it anyways. So I decided to drop a piece of sausage into its disk and it REALLY seemed to like it. It balled up pretty quick and ate it and now it's expanded back out again. Hopefully it's enough protein for it for a while.

I dont know enough about anything to try to give specifics of why that is a bad idea, but well, its just a BAD idea.

So many reasons why its a bad idea are rolling through my head right now.

Dont do it again. Buy some cocktail shrimp at the market and feed the anemone ONE every 4 or 5 days. And no, dont dip it in cocktail sauce first.

general rule of thumb in my house - nothing, that includes food items, goes into the tank unless its a fish food or supplement that I've studied asked about or had recommended to me from a trusted source.

I dont really have any idea what is in a sausage from a roundtable pizza. I can imagine that like alot of other human foods it contains preservatives and other things that probably dont belong in your tank.

That being said it probably wont harm your anemone, but checking here or with another trusted souce would be a good idea before feeding your anemone anything other than the recommended diet.

Aside from possibly having unwanted things in it, I doubt the sausage has the nutritional value a cocktail shrimp has, for the anemones purposes at least.

I hope that this is a joke...but for some reason I don't think so. Do you have any idea how much garbage goes into processed sausage? No, the "pork" may not harm your anemone or tank, but what about the various peppers, or sage, or fennel, the list of possible ingredients is almost limitless. Not to mention all of the chemical components like preservatives that can go into into processed meats. There are so many reasons why feeding pizza sausage to your anemone isn't a good idea that in honesty, I'm surprised that I'm having to point them out!

In fact, processed food is so chock full of "chemicals" that I wouldn't even eat it myself! just kidding. Life is built of chemicals. I'm not going to give you a hard time for feeding your anemone sausage, but here's my recommendation:

In my tanks, I strive to recreate the natural reef environment as much as possible. Is there sausage on a reef? well.. maybe sometimes, but it's "non-native", if you will. However, feeding fish and everything frozen krill, mysis and flake food is equally as foreign in its own respect, but is acceptable in the hobby because it's where technology has progressed to at this point. I wouldn't expect your anemone to eat krill or mysis. You should try feeding silver sides, which are a small fish that you can buy at your lfs or asian market. Read up on the requirements of your rbta, they don't need to be fed very often, nor very much. You need lots of light and very good water quality to have good success with them. You might also want to consider a clown fish to help you feed the anemone.

Before this really goes any further I am just kidding. I would never feed sausage to an anemone. I really tried to pick something so absurd that it would be obvious but I guess it wasn't. Actually it's kinda sad to see that I guess there are really people out there that would do something like this. Ohh well.

Ohh by the way, I Just came back from O street and they have a crap load of small complete coral colonies. I picked up a yellow acropora. It's got the acro crab in it and everything. It's acclimating in my tank now.

I have a newbie question that kinda goes along these line

I had a fish that died recently, and I thought for a second of feeding it to my anenome... I didn't, but would that've been ok? Does it matter what kind of fish it was? (It was a 6-line wrasse) I would've chopped it up to small pieces... but is that wrong? Like pepe.king.prawn said, he's trying to achieve a natural setting... it seems natural that a dead fish could wind up in an anenome...

^^^ Me Personally, if it died, it died for a reason and I wouldn't want to expose that reason to the insides of my anemone.

dead flesh is probably one of the things anemones feed on in reefs, but a dead fish is always suspect in an aquarium. It's probably not worth it to put your other fish at risk of disease by leaving a dead fish in your tank.

I feed my RBTA frozen krill and small pieces (no larger than 1/2 inch) of silversides. If I have time I try to soak the food in selcon first. Seem to have had good results, as the RBTA has tripled in size, has good color, etc.

No, it wasn't obvious, because yes, people ARE THAT STUPID!

I guess it may say something in that several people thought you were capable of actually feeding sausage to your RBTA ;-)

Garlic good, fennel bad :)

Most anemones are not natural predators of pigs, cows, pork salivary glands, or beef pancreas :) :)

I rarely put sausage inside of me, let alone my tank! I was just hoping this thread would get pushed to the bottom and forgotten about.
