My Anemone was to see me suffer... It hates me...
Its a Sabea
Levels are
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 5

salinity is 1.023
Temp is 78

I do biweekly water changes sometimes every week.
I Got this anenome a week ago and it look alright but i forgot to ask alot of questions. I have read and read and read on here why it maybe acting the way it is but i thought i would ask to get more opions... I put it on a rock and it will fall off it will not plant its foot. I put it in the sand and it balls up. There is onw spot in my tank where if I put it there it loves it and opens up some pretty but my the next morning its flat on its face in the sand. I dont know what to do... when i first got it its tentacles were not sticky.... they are started to sticky up and hold food but it will not eat it eventualy the food floats way... my clowns are to stupid to get out of the corner so i know they arent feeding it... is there anything i can do or should i take it back the lfs which is 2 hours from me said i could bring it back but if i can nurse it some i think it will be gourgoues....

thanks for any help
and Happy new years to everyone(i know its not news years yet)

If I'm not mistaken, your salinity should be 1.026. This is what I keep it at for my bulb tip anemones, but I'm not positive if that is true for all anemones.

What kind of lighting do you have? Work on getting your nitrates down to 0. What test kits are you using? What is your pH and alkalinity?

Do you have a pic?

tank is a little over 6 months had not added anything new to the tank in over a month... as for my light i am not really sure they are alot stong then what the lfs had... and i am currntly workingon my diy canopy where the 2 halide are going... they are white lights and one blue light... that is really all i can tell you about then. no refractometer have checked my hydo meter agianst those and so far so good... I no this problly does not help.. but i know the lights have a fan on them so that they dont get to hot... i bought it used

I am going to work on raising the salinty... had a big spill on the carpet today trying to rework my lighting to get the halides on but to no avail without melting alot of plastic... but cant raise salinty fast right!!!

test kit is aquirium pharistics or somthinglike that ( iknow i cant spell)

Dont know ph and alk was told as long as i did water changes i would be allright... (well i guess that wrong will work on getting some ordered )

Do you know any local reefers that could help you out and test your water parameters. I'm not familiar with your test kits. Salifert seems to be the most favored test kit as far accuracy. The blue bulb is your actinic. Your bulbs should say how many watts on them. Check that and then you can figure out your total watts you have over your tank. Is this for your 75 gallon tank? Any idea how old these bulbs are?

I've had may spills on carpet. I feel for ya, it's not fun.

heres a decent pic tonight after i moved it higher in the tank

looks like they are 96 watt coralife there are two of them and then the blue one.. the only guy local to me is currently battling ich.. and my local club is actually 2 hours away

ohhyeah they were new when we got them.. he had just got new bulbs so 6 months and yes its my 75 gallon thank you for your help... this is why i love the rc

I don't think you have enough lighting for your 75 gallon. Can the local guy come over and test your water parameters.

If my memory serves me right, and it may not, they like the sand. I'm really hoping someone with experience with these chimes in here before you move it. Sorry, I only keep BTAs.

The good thing is, your anemone does not appear to be bleached.

Do you have any idea of the scientific name of the nem? Sebae is a very general term and can actually be applied to a couple different species of nems. If you're not sure you can most likely get a very accurate ID here with the right pictures. There are some really knowlegable people here. If you post a picture not only of the front view, like you have, but of the underside that would be really helpful. It's best to post a pic of the foot, and the underside of the oral disk - lots of times this can be done with one shot. Don't make the shot too far away, though, or we won't be able to see all the things that need to be seen.

Usually we're looking for the color of the foot, and to see if there are bumps (verrucae) on the underside of the disk. If verrucae are present, then they'll be looking for color of those as well as the pattern. I still am not very good at that, but there are people who are. Having a positive id can make a big difference in providing the right care.

I have a H. crispa (commonly called a sebae) and it is a sand dwelling anemone. It prefers being near the sand. Because yours isn't gripping onto anything, and has already fallen off the rocks, I would suggest keeping it near the sand. If it does prefer rocks, it is possible for it to move itself there. I think MH will be helpful for you. Others with much more experience and the right tank set up have done it with pc's, but MH were easier for us.

When we got ours it was a small white ball of goo. Now it's happy and healthy, and much bigger than it was before! It did the face down on the sand thing too, we just tried to keep our hands off to cause less stress. There were times I was sure it was going to die, but it didn't. It righted itself, and started digging its foot into the sand.

The first week or so we had it, we would squirt thawed mysis shrimp near it. It was hard to tell if it was eating it or not because the nem and the shrimp were the same color, and of course the mysis are pretty small. But the mouth puffed up a little, and that's what we need to see (the puffing is different from gaping, gaping = bad). Not too long after we got it we were able to offer some scallops and it loved them.

Don't worry about your clowns not feeding it, mine don't either!

Good luck!

I'm not trying to give you are hard time but you really should get a handle on what is going on with your tank in terms of parameters and the equipment that you have. How can you expect to have something live and flourish when you don't even know if you have the tank to make that happen?

Alright everyone... he has fallen into the sand i am just going to leave him there... and let him do what he must... last night after i tried to feed him... lips came out of the mouth and was all fluffy. I think I will end up taking him back to the lfs and what till i can get my halides up next week.

I know my parameters but i just dont have the best eqiupemnt to test everything. the reason my salenity was low was becuase of the big spill while trying to get my halides up... the extension cord (which got wet ) started smoking... so when i added what i thought nothing about adding salt... lost alot of water... I am adujusting the salinity but slowly ( is that not correct) ... the reason i did not know my light was becuase it was never an issue i could descibe to who ever and they always told me they were pc and i need not to worry till i got some higher light corals....but thanks for your advise and your postive feedback!!!

I understand. Spend the money on the test kits though. You need to know your Ph, Ca, and alk.
Have a Happy New Year.

I have had my share of big spills. One HUGE spill all over the carpet and down a furnace vent. OOPS. Make sure than when you add salt, you mix it with some water first. Don't add dry salt to the tank. I did that once and learned my lesson. It nearly cost me my beautiful anemone. And if you have halides, use them but acclimate your critters to them (have them raised up higher over the tank at first, then lower them an inch a week until the desired distance is achieved). I also had an anemone that went belly-up on me daily (or rather nightly), then finally I got it to stick in one place but eventually it gave up the ghost and I think it was because of inadequate lighting and less-than-ideal water parameters. I was not very experienced then. Live and learn, I guess. Best of luck to you and keep us posted :)

The id on that looks like a Sabae, the brown is the internal algae that hosts in the nem which is a good thing, provides him food. Mine started out on hte rocks and is now at the base of some rocks with his foot in the sand, and yes most perfer to have there foot deep in the sand. Let him settle in for a few days, once he is nice and full then try feeding some mysis or cut up silversides 1/4" pieces. and please raise the salinity to 1.025 -1.026 over the next few days.

Good luck and keep us posted

Well... I hate to say it.. but I took him back I thought it was the best thing, It can probely gt better care with someone who knows more about them... I think my clowns will never host anyway (tank raised) but i have a awsome awsome frogspawn which would be perfect for them and evenually i am going to get a bubble coral... I think That my inexperiance was the deciding factor. if its true what they say that most of all nem come from the ocean i dont want to be some one who keeps trying by buy another everytime one does not make it... btw traded him in for a 8 pound piece of base rock and 4 green chromis which were going to be my next purchase anyway.... but agian thank you everyone for everything ... I LOVE the RC and recomend to anyone reading this, wait before you buy and nem 6 months is still to early to learn about such a hard to care for animal!!!
