My attempt at breeding black clowns (in a 28 gallon mixed reef)

Ok, we are are day number 8. Lights have been out for 30 minutes and I don't think any have hached. The tank has been at 78 deg, should I expect them to hatch tonight?

You were correct! They hatched tonight at 10:30, 30 minutes after the lights went out. I know that I did not catch all of them but I have enough to work with!

It looks like most of them made it through the night. I fed them rotifers for the 1st time. I have no idea how many are in there, I was aiming for 15/ml. Should I add a drop of Rotifer Diet in with the babies?

I always kept the fry tanks tinted green with rotifer diet. It was a tremendous help in keeping the roitfer population dense enough so that I was not stuggling each day adding more rotifers and depleteing my bucket-o-rots.

Congrats on the hatch

I added a drop of Rotifer Diet to their rank and gave them a second feeding at around 12:45 today. A lot of them are hanging out at the bottom of the rank. Is this normal?

Yes keep it tinted pretty green. I water mine down so telling you how many drops is useless. What kind of light do you have on the tank? Usually hanging on the bottom is an indication the lights are too bright. If they are hanging on the sides you need more phyto in the water. I find if you add some rots before lights out and some phyto the rots will multiply pretty good overnight in the nutrient rich warm water. Make sure you have a good density for the first few days or they'll starve. They shouldn't have to travel more than a body length and a half to bump into a rot.

I don't think the light is too bright. It is ~20w halogen light used to light a picture (sold by Ikea). I painted the outside bottom of the tank white. This may be causing too much light to reflect off the bottom?

I removed about 35 bodies today, hopefully the others will not follow suite.

I have a few that seem to be doing well, swimming near the top. The majority ar on te bottome and not very active.

pH 8.05
Temp 78

I would get rid of the white bottom for next time. They may be attracted to it? I'm not sure. Its hard to tell because I wouldn't expect to have great success for the first few spawns anyways. The egg quality is generally not great at first. Mine got better after 6 months or so. Just take what you get from this first few and learn.

Depending on how much water you have in that tank I would be surprised if 1 drop of Rotifer Diet is enough food to keep the rotifers healthy and multiplying. Not that my way is any better than yours......but I would add 12 drops to a five gallon tank at least everyday to keep the rotifer density thick enough in the larval tanks, after 10 days I would generally have some fat fellas swimming around.

Should I start offering otohime? I have all sizes but and scared to change up my routine of only feeding rotifers.

Hey they look good. You need to tint the water much greener to keep them off the sides. No Oto yet. Maybe start with a bit tomorrow and see if they eat it. (A of course)

I would like to transfer the babies into a new clean tank. Do you think this is an ok time to do this? They are 7 days old today.

Why do you want to transfer them? Is something wrong?

I always subscribe to the philosophy "If it ain't broke, don't go trying to fix it!"

The tank has algae starting to grow on the sides and the amonia is higher that I would like. Moving them over to a new tank would allow me to do a large water change and get a fresh start.
