I decided to get a new skimmer. I wanted the vertex alpha cone 250 skimmer, but it costs $1200 dlls. I decided to experiment on doing a DIY cone skimmer that would give me the same performance, same results on skimmate which is the most important function of the skimmer.

Of course that the original vertex alpha cone 250 comes with lots of gadgets for easy access, cleaning, etc. But what I really cared about is to achieve the same skimmate for a far cheaper price.

I´m sure many people have created their own DIY cone skimmers, there are many original commercial brands as well: MSX cone, ATB cone, etc.

But I decided to make a direct comparison with the original vertex alpha cone 250 skimmer. My LFS DIY cone which I have named "Don Rubertex alpha cone 250" (Don Ruben, is the owner of the LFG who built it) has the same measurements for the body of the skimmer as the original alpha cone 250.

Instead of using a red dragon pump, I will be using a Bubble Blaster HY-5000.
Why is that?. In order to prove that something equally good can be made with a far cheaper price tag, and also in order to test the new Bubble Blaster HY5000 pump which is new in the market.

There are 3 brands in the market that are under the same category:
RED DRAGON
ASKOLL aka LAGUNA
Bubble Blaster HY-5000

The red Dragon is supposed pull around 75 scfh maybe more
The askoll is supposed to pull around 80 scfh, but we´ve seen pictures of it reaching even 110 scfh
And the Bubble Blaster is supposed to pull around 85-90 scfh but we have also seen pictures and video of it reaching the 110 scfh.

The red dragon is in the $400 dll range, realiability quality, etc. is top notch. The Askoll its been around for a while and it is supposed to be very reliable, although some users have reported that it isn´t extremely great, the price is about $270 dlls with the volute for skimming.
Finally the Bubble Blaster HY5000 is around $220 dlls, many people have reported that it works great and a few LFS have said it beats the askoll, it hasn´t been tried for a long period of time, but it comes with 3 year warranty.

The body of the skimmer costs: $240
The BB HY 5000 pump costs: $220

Total $460 dlls vs $1200 dlls of the original, that´s 1/3 of the price of the original.

The BB HY 5000 comes with a nice presentation:

They are chinese but really good quality, I´ve seen many people using this brand with excellent results, they are definetely not bad quality chinese.

The pump is bigger than the red dragon:

It will be ready next week, so keep in tune for more.

Very nice right up Plancton. If you want to start breaking in the pump, you can take the air line off and drop if in some SW and let it run. When the skimmer is ready, it will be almost broken in. I can't wait to see what that HY5000 will. It would be very cool if you could run the skimmer with the HY5000 for 2 weeks, then maybe someone could let you borrow an Askoll and you could run it for 2 weeks. That would be cool. Cool. Later. Cool.

If you want to make a real comparison, then you need to take air-meter and Kill-a-watt. And that only applies to the performance that currently can be seen, and not on other factors what makes a good pump and its truly category/class.

The pump is bigger than the red dragon:

Also, when you say that is bigger, then you comapare wrong pumps.
Askoll1500 and Red Dragon1500 that you aim, are similar to HY-2000-3000?, not HY-5000. If you want to compare sizes of hy5000, then you must take bigger red dragon/airstar/2000/2500/3000 and they are made from Askoll/Laguna4200 motor block, which is bigger than HY5000.(also bigger volute). But i agree that HY is bigger than normal size red apple :)

did you drape form the cone? Vaccuum form? Im trying to find the best way to make a few of these, i can drape form them but its a pita.....

Size comparison: The LFS guy told me the pump was bigger than the Red Dragon on the alpha cone 250, anyways its bigger than the apple.

I don´t know about connecting an askoll to try it, the thing is, everything will be pretty much custom made, in fact I think once everything is in place acrylic legs will be glued to the bottom in order to lift the skimmer a bit, since the BB HY 5000 is taller on the pumps outlet, so we want the hole on the body of the skimmer to start at the same height as the original alpha cone 250.

I will compare it to my friend´s alpha cone 250, we´ll take pictures, video, analize ammount of gunk per x days. His tank is the same volume and has about the same bioload.

About the scfh, I don´t own a meter, I´m just giving you those numbers based on pictures and videos of people who tried these pumps and took pictures of their air meter results.

Yes, the skimmer is not ready yet, it will be probably on tuesday, and the project is supposed to be a replica of the Alpha cone 250.

My LFG is building it, he took measurements of the original Alpha Cone 250 body, then I he got a mold maker to build a mold, he is an expert with acrylic so he just bent the acrylic sheet to adjust the mold, cut parts, glued, etc.

I think that Alpha250 has RD1500, so yes, your pump is bigger(probably, i do not know right dimension now, but it has less air power than BB).
Im not fan of BB, but i also do not like RE.. we all know what kind of customer service they has:thumbdown
So, I congratulate you because you decided to do it yourself rather than buying it.

It is ready guys and the result is sexy:

Turned it on and it had no trouble bringing the bubbles all the way, in fact , the result looks absolutely the same as the original alpha cone 250

Video comming soon...

Wow...excellent job! The only thing I can complain about is that you didn't do the acrylic work yourself so we could see photo documented pictures on how to make one ourselves :) Needless to say, i'm jealous!

Crazy that the LFS guy just fabricated that cone body and skimmer just like that. Will he sell them to anybody for that price and ship??
