My Bacteria Driven Journey

I don't think it would be, but that's just my opinion. You can try to find small ones, and they don't grow big over night, just take them out if they do. Mine are very good getting between corals.

Diversity and the fact I stocked up on prodibio before going full bore with MB7 and vodka. My corals looked as good as yours but I had the fluffy stiff in the middle and it was spreading.

I went back to my fool proof water change regimen every 4 days, dosed the MB7 and am slowly ramping up my vodka per the reefkeeping mag table. Tomorrow I start the week 6 dosing.

MY ALGAE IS LEAVING AND MY CORALS ARE EXPLODING WITH COLOR AND GROWTH!!!

Perhaps I'll have to look around for one then. The LFS I picked up the Sea Hare from is usually great for finding CUC members. I'm just not out their direction all that often.

btw does anyone feed live phytoplankton or rotifers to their systems when dosing mb7/vodka?
I feed frozen rotifers once per week about an hour after lights out.

Gotcha. That's great to hear you're having good results! :D

How much MB7 are you currently dosing? I think I mentioned it, but am considering doubling my current daily dosage. I really don't think there is any negative to doing so, but am curious to see how my skimmate production/color would react.

I'm only on 1.8 ml of vodka per day right now (week 2).

8-10 gtts in the 90

30 gtts in the 175

Started wk 7 dosing today--was wrong in the previous post.

Don't dose prodibio/bioptim again until the 14th, I hold the MB7 those days.

I followed the bottle's directions for the 1st two weeks and did the high nutrient dosing during that time. It does warn about not overdosing on the bottle though.

I added 5 big turbos and 3 tuxedo urchins in the begging too.

Hey TJ

Great results so far, interested in your progress.

Do you still have your calcium reactor or dosing a two part? Also are you doisng Kalk as well?

Here is an updated picture of the skimmate production and color. This is probably 5 days worth.

Thanks. Glad to have you along as well.

I no longer use the Calcium Reactor. I now use the Kalk Reactor which is dosed via my ATO, 2-part additives, and Magnesium. I'm currently dosing the 2-part and Magnesium manually while I try and decide on a dosing pump unit.

Also chiming/listening in.

BRS dosers are working well for me for 2 part.

Here too. 2 BRS dosers for the 2 part and manual dose for Mg.

Thanks, I noticed some more "lighter patches" in the tank today. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it's a sign of things to come.

My system is pretty small, and packed with coral... so it would be very difficult for it to move around the rocks without sending things flying or causing damage, and with how large they get... well my tank footprint is only 30" x 22" (28.5" x 20.5" ID).

Also, I'm having salt mix issues. Since my tank has such a small water volume, I do have to worry about the parameters in the freshly mixed water for water changes... primarily the alkalinity. The first batch of Red Sea Coral Pro I mixed up tested at 13.4 dKH! So I scrapped that... or well used it in the QT tank, then mixed a batch of Coralife up that tested at 11.8 dKH! After seeing that result I figured something must be up with the test kit, and pulled out the 7.2 dKH test solution. After testing it with the solution, I figure my kit could potentially be off .05 dKH on the high side at the very most (taking into account that the calibration solution can be off + or - .03). So not enough to skew the results significantly.

I think the Coralife (which I just ran out of) will be the safest to use at this point, but either way I'm pretty disappointed. I figure there could be a chance that the Red Sea bucket may have had settling issues or something, so I gave it a good mix with a piece of PVC and plan on making up another batch tomorrow to see if there are any changes.

Whenever I mixed Reef Crystals to 1.026 it also had Alk around 11dkh. I tried H2Ocean for a while, but ran into some issues with it.

I am currently using Tunze salt with great success. I know its pricey, but on a smaller system it isn't so bad. I only do 5 gallon water changes so it lasts awhile. Alk is around 9dkh at 1.026

BTW, awesome thread. Really making me consider the vodka/MB7 route. The only issue I am really battling is lobophora.

Look forward to watching the progress.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to make a decision between 3 BRS drew's dosers and the Profilux GHL standalone 3 pump dosing unit. It may end up coming down to what's in stock though.

I'm actually leaving for Ohio in a few minutes, and may make a stop by Salty Critter while I'm out that direction. I know they stock Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salt, and I could avoid shipping charges. Plus, I haven't been to their store since I moved back to PA.

I feel like I am looking into my past with this thread.
I have not seek GHA appear so quickly in a new setup.
Was the rock from another tank that was not baked?
Regardless - you need to kill that stuff. My current tank looks almost identical to your setup - but you have a lot more light.
Have you tried turning the lights off for five days straight and bring them back slowly?
From the pics it does not appear that you have bryopsis or that very course and tough red algae - that's the good news.
I have seen great and quick results with Algae Fix Marine - it does aggravate some SPS but I have not seen long term negative affects.
I am starting to dose the microbater7 in my tank - as I over feed my current setup with seahorses & seafans, SPS, LPS, zoos, clams,,,,.
Interested in seeing how this works out in a few months.

Have you noticed the HA starting to get whitish in areas yet? That was my first sign of improvement, wondering if it will be the same for you as well. Also, are you pulling any out manually?

Some of the rock was transferred from an old established system, but a lot of new rock was added. I think that's the root cause for the current outbreak. Hopefully if it in fact does turn out to be an algae cycle, it will disappear as quickly as it showed up.

For the amount of light I have above the tank, it really isn't that intense in the tank. The PFO reflectors I'm using aren't very good IMO. At this point in time I wouldn't be comfortable turning off the lights for an extended period of time.

I'll have to check out that Algae Fix Marine product.

It is getting lighter in some areas, but I haven't seen any noticeable improvement yet. I can't really manually remove any of it, as it grows very low to the rocks. So I think pulling the rocks out and scrubbing them would be my only option. However, I can't do that because of all the corals.

Of course after I post that I can't manually remove the algae, I spent a few hours in the tank today pulling away. Initially it started just to remove bubble algae that has seemed to be blooming again, but then I found that I could pinch and pull some of the hair algae, but couldn't really get large amounts out at a time. It was quite frustrating and I sent more than a few corals flying during the process... but here's what I ended up with in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket.

Vodka dosing will be increased to 2.8 ml tomorrow (week 3). Also, 2-part dosing will be increased to 30 ml of each part, as well as flipped. Meaning that I now plan on doing my Alkalinity dosing in the AM, and Calcium dosing in the PM (for pH reasons).

My nitrates test 0 (sailfert), no phos test kit. I have 2 kinds of hair algea & lots of bubble algea. I started .3ml vodka yesterday after 2 weeks of MB7. My question is how do I know what my maintenance dose will be? Total water volume is 70gal.
Dave

I read CORAL magazine this weekend with the featured Treasure Chest Coral Box article published this year.

Author used full blown Zeovit in an almost bare bottom tank and maybe 20 pounds of live rock in a 120 gallon tank. He used filter floss changed daily and some bioball which is almost unheard of anymore.

He claims to add Calcium Nitrate and Calcium Phosphate back with full blown Zeovit system. He mentioned lab grade tests but article stopped there not mentioning target levels or specific tests used. I didn't see any easy way to contact tank owner. I'll cite article if anyone else is interested.

Low Range test kits in hobby only got 0 ppm.

Hi Dave,

I have not found a definite answer regarding that question. It sounds as if we are in similar situations though with no "detectable" nutrient levels even though the nuisance algae present in the system suggests otherwise. Based on the maintenance doses I have seen on some other tanks, I plan on holding at 2.8 ml for at least 2 weeks. Then depending on my observations during that time period I will make a call whether to continue increasing the dosage or not.

Hope that helps.

great progress TJ! Im following in your footsteps and am starting to see great results and im only in the MB7 stage. Mind you i dose either zoo plantknon or live phyto at night. Im really starting to see major coral extention like never before on all my SPS. Somehow i think i need to raise my light as i think i am slowly starting to bleach a couple corals located in the middle of the tank.
