My Bangai Breeding Project

After a couple years in the hobby, I have decided that I need a challenge, one that will test my patience as a hobbyist, and one that will help the hobby out as a whole. After reading up on the natural habbitat of the Bangai Cardinalfish, and the grim outlook these fish have. I feel it is my right as a aquarist, hobbyist, and breeder to do my best to propogate these fish.

I have been planning this for a couple weeks now.

I have been gathering my supplies:
20 Gallon Breeder (Will double as a show tank in our entryway)
2x10 Gallon tanks for fry
Brine Shrimp Hatching System: Will go into more detail later

The 20 Gallon will have a Hang on Back Skimmer, Small Aquaclear HOB to act as a refugium, and a small powerhead (powering the Skimmer).

Fry tanks are what I am unsure about. I have an abundance of sponge filters, and I could always use those. I also have HOB filters, but am afraid of the flow. Any suggestions?

I am going to buy a decent amout of sea urchins to help with the fry.

How does this sound? Any suggestions? Words of warning? I have been reading that Bangai Cardinal fish have been dying lately. Anyone?

Thanks

Good to hear your wanting to raise bangais.I put my fry in a 12 gallon nano with a maxi jet 400 that's adjusted to put out very little flow. You could make a fake urchins like shandy made, useing bottle caps and zip ties..Are you talking about wild bangais or captive raised dying.

I'm tagging but also i will get some information for you as the lfs i work for purchases them from a hobbyist that has had great results breeding them . i will check out what the important things are and what he has had success with and also i will get some information on what he has found that are no no,s . i will get you some information asap but it could be a few days and i hope that i can help you out .

Iamwrasseman-Thanks! That is great to hear that someone is behind me! I really appreciate it, let me know as soon as you get information.

I have an LFS that is going to pick up new stock about an hour away next week. They offered to hand pick me a pair, and they have extensive knowledge of the sexing and caring of these fish and I trust them 100%.

They are about as easy to raise as baby guppies.I was worried to when my male released the fry.I only lost one because he released it before I could get him out of the tank.I have 19 that are over 1 month old andeat like little pigs.Keep us posted on any info that maybe benificial to other people wanting to breed bangais.

This is a good idea. I personally have found such 'challenges' to be a great way to keep your interest into the hobby when your interest may be hitting a low...
