My Biocube 14g

FWIW, 84 might be a fine temp but it doesn't leave much room for error. I try to keep my 12g nanocube at around 80-82 max. I saw that it only took 8g to fill the tank so that small water volume won't take much to heat up. Also, it might help with the evaporation a little. All it took was 1 hot day this 4th of July weekend and I came home to find my tank had spiked from 80 to 92 and I have no idea what high it hit. Before I could do anything 2 acans and a bunch of zoas all melted away. Just my .02

Taken from that Dr. Shimek article:
The most rapid growth of most corals is generally around 27°C to 29°C (80.6°F to 84.2°F) (Barnes et al., 1995; Clausen and Roth, 1975; Weber and White 1976; Coles and Jokiel, 1977, 1978; Highsmith, 1979a, b; Highsmith, et al., 1983).

nice article, thanks for the find. i have 2 of these fans that just came in on friday i'll be installing tonight along with a water change. they move twice the amount of air so i'm going to see how much of a decrease that will give me. might need to pick up a heater or go back to 24/7 on the fuge led. we'll see what it drops to.

I think you need to make that your avatar now.

wanted to say done and done, but apparently i need 70 more posts. time to whore it up.

by the way, to keep it somewhat tank related... my weeks begin on mondays so it's 21 days old today and the beginning of week 4. dinner with my gf and some friends kept the work to a minimum this evening.

-- Week 4 --

7/19/10 - water change, new nassarius snail

took the water to the LFS, calcium was back up to 440 so that was good, temp is staying at 84F. need to get the fans in this week. pics tomorow.

ahh, in the user cp... not sure why i read a thread saying the option would be enabled after 100 posts...

You are at an awesome start so far. Good thing you bought new fans cuz the ones on mine just crapped out on me >:0

thanks! how long until they died? i got some cheap ones $6.50/ea and I bet they're loud. i'll post a video when they're on, hopefully i'll do it tonight.

chores prevented any work last night, but during feeding time i was able to pull this out of my tank...

Are they just regular 12VDC computer fans? I modded a regular computer case fan into my orbit and it's whisper quiet, the brand is called Silenx.

i bought 2 of these. can't find a 50x10mm silenx for some reason. maybe if i look harder...
That is a really noisy fan (35dB) for the amount of air it pushes (15cfm), and over 100x as loud as my Silenx (which pushes 32cfm at 14dB. My fan benefits from being 80mm though. It would appear that most 50mm fans are going to be pretty loud, since they have to spin at much higher RPM to move adequate air. However, even those 25dB models will be 10x quieter than the fans you have now.

ADD: The specs on this fan look great. Hopefully you can find it elsewhere for a lower price:

damn, i never thought to look at newegg. i might get the ipcqueen 5015s if these are horribly loud and double the cfm and for $1.50/ea less! seems i've stumbled across my first mistakes (of many i'm sure). at least it was just buying the wrong fan. your recommendation looks really good too if 17cfm will keep things cool. i'm thinking about doing the 3.24 retro from nanotuners with uvl pcr bulbs when they're available, so i might need a little more umpf from my fans. we'll see how the temps look.

Looking great so far! I love the gator hahaha

thanks james!

After 3 months they started making a super loud noise whenever they turned on and like 6 months later, they completely stopped working.

installed new fans. zach was right, these things are retarded loud. interested to see what the new cfm will do to temp, but new fans are a must! i won't bother putting pics of the install, i'm sure there's a write-up on changing these somewhere and if not i'll throw it in the nano threads.

You need to get that out of the tank. It's a predatory polyclad flatworm that feeds on snails and mollusks.

Tank is looking good so far. IMO, wait a while before fragging those orange zoas. there's only a few there. give the colony a few months to multiply before you stress them by fragging them.
