My Blue Spot Jawfish and his Condo

This is my 3rd bluespot. The first one lived a few months and ate like a pig but could never find a place to call home since he was the last fish in the tank so all the good spots were taken. One day he stopped eating and that was that. The second one was drip acclimated for about 2 hours and I put him in and never saw him again. I have a barrier blocking the over flow so I don't think he jumped in there but who knows. So before adding the 3rd and final blue spot I did some research and decided to make him a Condo. I bought two 3/4" elbows one was 45degree and the other was 90degrees. I put a decent sized barnacle that had no bottom over one elbow and the other elbow I glued some small pieces of rock to it. My tank is crowded and there's not a lot of room so I had to make it small. I connected the two elbows with a 2 inch piece of 3/4" pvc. You could make it bigger if you had more room. Getting him in the condo was the hard part. I used a small disposable gladlock container and i cut a hole in the top. After i acclimated the fish i put him in the container that had water in it. I covered the hole with a net which turned out to be very difficult. I think some plastic food wrap might have worked better. I put the container with the fish in it in the tank and put the hole over the barnacle that I used on one end. Less than a minute later he was in and few min after that he was actually eating frozen mysis. Anyways here's a few pics and a short video.

I seen something similar but it was a 1 way in 1 way out square. But I think this one is a better idea. Nice work.

That is friggin' awesome. I want, lol!

Very simple and cheap to make and no glue is needed for the pvc except if you want to glue rocks to the elbows. Also I made the other pvc condo that only had one entrance and exit but IMO this one is much better. So far he loves going from one side to the other. My only problem is knowing how often to Feed him since he's very hungry all the time. I have a lot of fish so I usually put around 2-3 frozen mysis cubes a few min apart per day.

Just fees him as you do with your other fish. They will eat as much as you feed. Also don't be surprised if it chooses a new location down the road. Mine tends to make new tunnels all over my 65g. Then will go back to the old one.

Thanks to your idea my jawfish is happy in his new home.

Nice! It wasn't my idea tho :) I found it online. Anyways someone in this thread jinxed me cause it made a new home a few inches from the one I made. At least it was happy for a week which made him feel safe tho and he's still eating like a pig! I really think they like the sand tho cause it gives him something to build, clear, and clean up at all times. I think they probably get bored in PVC. It's amazing how fast they can build a tunnel from one rock to another. Just watch out for any coral on the bottom cause he will spit sand all over it.
Ps don't leave any small frags around cause he will use them to build his cave.

Sorry to jinx you. But I was speaking from experience. ;)

Glad it's eating well. Make sure you provide it with things to build and secure its new home. Don't be surprised if it moves around and back to previous spots. And secure your frags. I watched my jawfish pickup and drag a WWC frag plug with a favia on it across my 65g to its hole.

I made a simililar home for my bluespot a while back. I had to find a creative way to help him find the home in a 300dd so i pinned him down with a tupperware container and it actually worked.

I love these blue spots. First one I saw was in Marvin's tank, and I thought it was the coolest thing (although I think Marv was rather annoyed by the constant construction zone, LOL!) Second one I saw was in Thunda's tank. I would really like one eventually, but I'm planning on a shallow sand bed, probably 1.5"-2" tops. Will making a condo like this sort of offset the need for the deeper bed? Any creative ideas for having a deeper bed in one part of the tank and shallow elsewhere? These fish are so awesome and interesting to look at! Any advice appreciated from you BSJ caretakers!
