Sorry dazed we are way off topic here

I don't have much in my main so I figured I would try vodka dosing seems to be working for me!

Maybe you should get a test kit? You don't own one? Yes I'd double check the ammonia.. Dazed? Dazed who? Was this his thread?

My badge hasn't been yellow since I put it in with the larvae. I've done two water changes so far and the larvae are only on day 6 and this is with using live phyto and not the paste. How are you guys and gals keeping your ammonia down? I know I've lost (some):D , because of this. Any tips are welcome

I had the same problems the first couple of times around. I was using Amquel at 4 times the recommend dosage and doing 90% wc's and the badge would not budge. So since that was not working for me when i placed an order with reed for some ia & the otohime starter pack I talked with them about the product they offer Cloram-X.
http://www.reed-store.com/?category=48&subcategory=37&productid=CLRMX-5

It is used in commercial applications & during shipment of livestock from distributors. Since we are normally dealing with a very small amount of water the tub i have will last a long time. The current batch of babies that i have which is the first to get this far for me is the same batch that i started using this product with and the ammonia badge has never budged from safe. I use less than a 1/4 teaspoon added to my make up water for the larvae tank.

The other thing i did was take FB's advice and did not clean off my heater or airstone during the attempts.

:D I'm here & no worries at all i get off topic all the time. The reason we come here is for help/suggestions, etc. If my thread can help someone else out then that is fine by me. If it were not for the help that i have received from you guys i would not be doing this at all.

I do have to admit though I'm glad that I'm not the only one with issues in my main tank i have a hair algae problem that will not go away.

Which one:eek1: :D

So anyone have suggestions on what to do with my rotifer cultures that i have not harvested for a while? I checked on them last night and there is some in there.

I have been feeding them just not removing any of them....

Thanks Dazed, I know someone mententioned Cloram-X before ,and I guess I didn't realize how good the stuff was. I don't clean my heater and air stones either so hopefully a big enough bacteria colony will grow and be able to convert some of this ammonia. Oh, and my snails keep my algae under control :D (knock on wood) let me keep my mouth shut  . Once my denitrator catches back up again ,my cyano should start receding. Keeping parents well fed with a variety of food doesn't go well with keeping nitrates and phosphates down.

Give em to your reef tank Dazed.

Coral food i guess right, what about pods will they eat rot's? Do you turn off the skimmer for a while?

I guess i can't really say for sure if it was the cloram-X or the seasoned heater & equipment from a couple of tries but i have to think that it did something. The way i treated the larvae tank this time around was very proactive, i did not wait for the ammonia to show up, i just assumed it was coming and i guess lucked out that it did not.

I plan to do the same routine every time.

Yes the feeding is a bit of a problem in my reef as well, i even have 3 anthias to feed as well.

As far as I know pods eat Phyto. I'm sure there are other small creatures that will eat rots though. Yes I turn the skimmer off for a hour or so.

Thanks everyone for the comments; guess i will distribute some of the rot's to the refugium than as well.

Fresh batch of eggs laid last night, yeah finally. the clutch before was very small and i think the male had the same thought as me not enough of them to bother with, lol.

Update on the others yesterday i noticed that half of them were at the surface still in the corners; while the other half were in a group at the bottom in front of a piece of pvc i placed in the tank. Maybe they were trying to swim down to an anemone like they would in the wild, or so i read.

Sad, sad post:( Well i just back from lunch and not very good news to report. I went to feed the little ones as i do everyday at lunch and was shocked/sad/****ed/depressed all in one.
I found that 5 of them were dead on the bottom of the tank. I have no idea why? They are 39 days old today and i thought i was pretty much in the clear you know just keep them fed and keep the junk off the bottom of the tank.

aghhhh.... After the time invested it's very frustrating to type this out.

I only had time to run a quick ph test and found the tank at around 7.5? could that be the issue??

Could it be diet related? I have only been giving them otohime a & bbs for a while now.

That pH could be an issue, it could also be sign of other water quality parameters needing improvement as well. I'd give them a large water change.

Thanks Bill; how large 50% or bigger than that?
The ammonia badge still reads safe what other water parameters should i check?
sg=1.019
temp was close to 80 deg.

They are still in the 5g tank with around 4g of water?

I did the last wc 2 days ago & removed/replaced 1g of water at that time.
