Dazed,

I have a deep sand bed as one of my tanks, so far this has worked great for Ammonia and Nitrite. I'm still waiting for it to help with Nitrate. So I don't put any sponge filters in any tanks. I do have the sponge from the mag 9.5 in my return area so it gets alot of flow so I'm sure that helps.

I don't keep airlines in each tank but probably should. In the event of a power failure (if battery operated) it could save your fish. If the power stays on the flow of water alone is enough to oxygenate your water even without a skimmer.

FB

good points i somehow forgot about using a DSB to help with the water parameters, I think i need to go back and look over your thread pictures some more, for some reason i am having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out how i want to setup this system.

They hatched on 9/14/08. I will see if I can get some pictures posted later tonight. (and start my own thread) :)

 Pictures would be great. If they are over 4 months old and only an 1" in size maybe my perc's are not all that retarded after all. How many stripes do they have?

I don't have airstones or sponge filters in my tanks. The skimmer and circulation is enough. I have strainers on my overflows but they still get in.. Who knows how.

It's magic :D

Maybe i am confusing myself with the pictures i remember seeing in your thread before you setup a growout system.

OK, here's a quick photo of them:

Most have the beginning of a third strip, some are more defined than others.

Here is some video I shot as well, hopefully you can view it:

Nice picture & video Ed; but you just ruined my day if those are only 4 months old than my original 8 that i have are retarded for sure:lol:

Ed- those are some beauts!

If you look closely and squint a bit and wait til your eyes go blurry, the fish ball forms a heart about 3/4ish way through the vid! HAHA awesome little swimmers man!

They look older than your date. Most Percs get there Third bar at about 9 months.

I was going by the date that Ed posted he said; "They hatched on 9/14/08."
I was wondering about that as i have some of my percs that are around 6mths old and some of them still don't even have their 2nd stripe.

I confirmed that was the date they hatched. The breeder indicated previous hatches from that pair also matured at much faster rate.

Well they look great no matter when they were hatched. Did you happen to pick the brain of the breeder? You know for some tips/tricks to get them on their way??

How is this for an idea? A friend of mine dropped off a 40g glass bow front style tank last night, a little scratched up but the price is right as in free. I do have an old 15g tank setup as a sump with baffles etc. (my first build from a while back) i also have a lifereef overflow that i could use to connect the two tanks.

We were kicking around ideas on splitting the 40 into 3 sections to use as a growout tank for my percs. With 3 sections each would be roughly 12.5g or so.
I was thinking of using eggcrate and attaching some plastic window/gutter screen with aquarium safe silicone to keep them in the sections while letting the water pass thru.

I would not have the advantage of pulling a single tank offline if i needed to medicate for something, but this would give me 3 sections to use as grow out area.

Will it work?? or is there a better way than the eggcrate. Acrylic is to expensive to use.

I use a similiar set up. I have a 55 gal tank and 2 tank dividers. That gives me 3 section. It works great. The tank dividers run about $20 each. I don't know how that compares price wise to your idea. My grow out tank came the same way - free is good. My husband had it in the garage in storage. The light and filter still work. I did have to replace the heater. The babies have lots of room now.

One thing to watch with the tank dividers. I had one in a 25 gallon and had the heater and filter on one side. One day while cleaning i noticed the temperature was significantly warmer on one side. The side without the heater was about 7 degrees cooler. Obviously the heat wasn't getting through. I put a filter / heater on the other side as well. That was using sponge filters. I assume using a different type of power filter would create more flow and eliminate the problem.

That is a good point. I was able to solve that by putting the uptake on one side of the tank and the return on the other. I should have included that in my response. Thanks for pointing that out.

One other word of caution. I cover my filter uptake with blue floss when the babies are small so that they cannot get sucked in to the filter. With my filter, it would be certain death to get sucked in. If you are using a sump it is more of a free ride down to the sump.
