Just a couple tips I use when I'm drilling FWIW. I tape the back of the hole with well.. Hockey tape. (I'm Canadian give me a break) also I drill from the inside out so I don't need a dam. I just have a small hose and keep the water running. Have the drill turn slowly. Also I support the back with folded paper towel to absorb some of the pressure. When starting the bit I find it helpful to tip the bit to one side until it bites. Then slowly flatten it out. Like I said 10g's are hard. The glass is thin as hell. It looks like you had it and it was just pushing through the other side that broke it.

I've never seen them lay on top of another nest that's cool. But a Pita for you.

When drilling try not to stop. Just drill right through. You can tell how close your as the bit makes a different noise the closer you get. Well it did for me anyway. And yes I would drill against something like a piece of wood. This will stop the glass from chipping on the other side. I drill from the inside to the outside of the tank with wood under the tank which lets you put a little more pressure on the bit.....But not to much :D

It might look cool but after last night's hatch there are hardly any new eggs left, and to add insult to injury i checked on my 12 swimmers at lunch and found them all gone, the water is a bit cloudy so i guess there was a bacteria issue, the tank had bbs & babies last night and now nothing.

I will add some wood to the bottom on the next attempt as well.

just my experience, but when drilling glass....it's typically easier to have the drill running when you make contact w/ the glass - both when starting the 'groove' and when placing the bit back in contact with the glass after checking progress or adding water.

Thanks for the tips i can't remember for sure if the bit was running slowly or not when i cracked it; i think it was but i may have been off just a bit as far as being straight up & down and without bracing the glass it broke, quick way to go through 11 dollars, lol.

Hockey tape sweet, i did see in some of the videos i watched where they did tape the back of the hole to prevent the cut out piece from falling through and cracking the other side but since the way i went with the bit it had nothing to fall against so i thought i would be ok. I think the next one i will drill from the inside out and skip the dam.

I started the bit like you said it did walk a bit but one side started in and i slowly adjusted it, i was real close to being ok i almost made it, lol. I think i am going to try a 20g tank next time though due to the glass being a bit thicker.

I have not seen a nest on top of a nest either in all the reading i have done i was a bit shocked to see that last night. I did lose almost all of the eggs though due to the hatch that happened last night.

lost my other batch of 12 day old's as well today fun fun:rollface:
 
Bummer. I don't have any trouble really after about day 6-7. Someone told me breeding clowns was easy money... I'm still waiting for both. lol.
 
Sorry about your bad luck man, maybe you could practice drilling on the 4 remaing panes. Im sure its in the thread somewhere, but do you get ur water from your reef? Or do you mix new water?
 
Those photos of the double spawn are awesome. How long was the first batch of eggs on the tile, before the second batch were laid ?

I still don't get what's gone wrong lately with my batches. I have been losing them up until day 5 or so. This is the first time i have had an issue with them after they were already eating bbs & oto. Guess you can add me to the waiting list as well, lol.

Thanks although i am starting to think that maybe i am wasting my time.
Good idea on using the tank for practice to bad i didn't think of that before throwing it out, lol.....
I usually remove a couple of gallons from my reef and then 1 or 2 days after the hatch i start to lower the sg.

The normal 10 days for me; i was going to pull the tile after dinner but someone else had different plans, my wife was joking with me and thinks that the female did this so i would not steal her eggs,:)

She has laid a clutch the day after the hatch but this is the first time she has not waited.
 
I've never seen a double clutch like that, nice pictures.

Yep; i watched that one (their video does not show supporting the glass either but they did use a drill guide) and a bunch of other ones. I ordered the glass bit from BRS as well as the bulkheads and some more 2 part stuff for my reef.

Just out of curiosity is it the ones that show the double clutch?

Yup, that double clutch is cool, as well as being great shots of nest tendings. The presentation is one I'm putting together for the undergrad marine bio club. Sort of an informal presentation on aquaculture and keeping marine life in captivity.
 
Sounds like a neat project. Do you need the pictures emailed to you? do you need ones that have not been resized?

Have you ever seen the double clutch happen before?
 
I can pull them right from here. Thank you for their use.

That is the first time I've seen a clutch laid before the last clutch hatched, in clownfish.
