My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

No I've never had a sponge filter fail. Or a spontaneous cycle of any sort.

Me either until now; What type of maintenance do you do for the sponges in your tanks? I have been squeezing/rinising them out during wc's every once in a while. What i do is just clean them in a 5g bucket of water removed from the tank does that sound reasonable?

Maybe i should add two to a tank?

That's exactly what I do. I only use 1 a tank... but my growout is a plumbed setup. Only the little guys have sponges typically.

Good to know. I do have 2 sponges in my 10g as well as a small hob; I keep thinking about setting up a plumbed growout as well but with all the constant setbacks right now i just can't see starting that project.
Well due to my anemone rock falling over and the anemone moving around a bit i have no eggs at all i am hopeful that now since i have gotten everything close to how it was she will resume laying eggs at some point.

Well i am still waiting for new eggs although she did start aggressively cleaning the tile last night; finally maybe we can get back to normal.

Well scratch normal after all of her fanfare over the weekend she laid one egg! ugh which disappeared the next day so still waiting for new eggs to work with; but fear not i had a alk swing in the tank which took out some acro colonies so it's not like i don't have something to deal with. lol.

They're getting their groove back. I hope they lay a big fat (viable) clutch for you here in less than a week or so.

And about the project of plumbing together the growout tank. Maybe the stability would help solve your problem, or solve it in some other way. I know its hard to get motivated with all the bad luck, but who knows it might end up making everything youve done worth it.

me to I think she was really upset with the anemone falling over and hopefully it just disrupted her a little bit. For now i am going to wait on expanding anything until she is back to laying eggs on a regular basis.

Still wondering why i had the alk. swing in the dt though; sure not fun to look at some of the small colonies that are totally fried.

Well she did lay new eggs on Sunday but i think the timing between him/her is off; as the eggs look yellow and i don't think they are fertilized. So I am going to let this batch just be and hatch out on it's own and hope that the next one is better.

Still a good sign though!

Very true; the male has already removed or eaten most of the batch & only about 10 eggs remain, but i am hopeful that the next time around will be better.

Update for me; new eggs as of last night, not the largest of clutches but at least the eggs look good this time around.

Hope things start to pick up for you!

I have not had eggs in a long time. Just came back from a weeks vacation and my alk had dropped to 6. My corals are all pale and my clam is even in trouble. I'm trying to bring it back up but it's just not pretty. With not having spent any time on breeding I have been able to put a little more love into my display tank and things were looking up before my vacation. I can't wait to get my display back to normal as I have a crap load of store credit to spend :D

Don't get discouraged stick with it. It's looks like you have hit the same rut that I did.

Good Luck

Yeah i have not had eggs to deal with for over a month at least; I have been just maintaining what i have on hand with 3 daily feedings and wc's once a week, I had been doing the same thing giving the dt some attention, i have been carbon dosing for a while now and i figured it's been a while since i did a wc on the dt so i figured i would go ahead and do one, not knowing that i have another bad batch of rc apparently as i have been scratching my head as to where the alk swing came from in my tank, turns out the water in my brute that i use was @ 7 and not the normal 12 to 13dkh that rc is supposed to mix up at; so by removing around 30g of water and replacing with the lower alk i think i figured out where the swing came from; you just can't beat this hobby sometimes it seems; lol. In general a wc is a good idea it just did not work out in my favor this time.

the eggs though in the dt look good and are developing nicely so i should be able to have another batch on the run by this weekend.

I hope you can get your dt back in shape as well.

Is it just me or does it seem FB takes a lot of vacations.

He sure has me beat:lol:

I get 3 weeks vacation that is all.

I like to go somewhere warm in March.

A week with the parents/inlaws in Summer.

A week with the parents/inlaws @ Christmas.

The last two week are no Vacations. :D

YOU GUYS ARE HILARIOUS!

Welcome back FB! Nice to see you again! LOL :)
On a different note, can someone PLEASE tell me what a normal mortality rate I should expect from a hatch? It seems every time I feed the larvae, they die! I just don't get it! Out of hundreds of eggs, I'm down to just over a dozen again after two days. I'm sure someone already covered this topic in here but my eyes wouldn't be able to handle that much reading! :)
