My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

Hey Gresham thanks for the kind words it's been pretty crazy around my place but things are settling back down & i can get back to the good old project list, lol... Sarah is doing much better and we are hopeful that all is under control.

For the tank setups i'm thinking i want to try and keep the head loss factor to a minimum so i don't have to run energy hungry pumps for the returns, thinking about a spray bar type return along the back wall what do you think?

The spray bar is exactly what those units are designed for so I say go for it. I would loop it though.. meaning don't just dead end the pipe, 180 it back to the start then T it back in. this allows all parts of the spray bar to have near equal flow.

Glad to hear about Sarah. Drop me an email, I have a new desk phone that is easier to call me on.

Gresh; i have read what you posted 3 times now lol and not sure what you mean by 180 back to the start? do you mean like a closed loop then? I did cut 6" of the tanks do you think it's going to be an issue? it just looked like wasted space, i also need to get some different bulkheads all i have are 3/4" & 1" and i think the existing holes in some of the tanks are 1.5", i will shoot you an email as well.

Let's see if I can ASCII illustrate it :)

..............SPRAY BAR

that's what i pictured in my head from your text; pump in the sump up to the spray bar. So your saying that way will produce a more uniform flow? even with the (4) 90 deg. elbows? then if i just used a dead ended pipe with a ball valve at the pump?

That is exactly what I am saying. Hobbyists rarely do it, but it's super common in aquaculture facilities where a little more thought goes into plumbing :)

my lfs has tanks that loook identical to your new ones, he also went the route of spray bars and they work awesome. it allows you to have more flow in each subtank without worrying about plastering the fish to the glass.

cheers

Well i think you may know a thing or two about plumbing call me crazy but i think so

Do you think i could use the return pump that i have currently on my 40g breeder? It's a Rio 2100 stats:
pumps 692gph @ 0 head
pumps 486gph @ 3' head
pumps 375gph @ 4' head

consumes 25w
3/4" outlet.
This would be just for the tank with the 3 large compartments holding some breeding pairs; i measured the distance from the sump on the bottom shelf to around the top of the tank and the head height would be around ± 3'? Do you think it would work?

Where should the spray bar be placed?
right now their is a hole in the side of the tank but a 3/4" line would not fit in there unless i modified it 1/2" slips right thru?

Thinking of using just one single 1" drain on this tank (the one in the corner with the box around it)?

What do you think?

thanks for the information; where are the spray bars placed? right at the water level? or are they angled to hit off the back wall and run down into the tank? anyway of snapping me a picture of the setup?

Chris how about I take off early on Friday and just come over and show/help you? Living 15 minutes from you makes this very easy.

FWIW Chad is a mad plumber as well. He's one of the only other people I would recommend as well.

Gresham; that would probably work a whole lot better than back & forth here
I don't know what your schedule looks like but i will be home a little after 12 on Friday but have to be ready to leave my place by about 3:00
shoot me an email or give me a call and we can figure something out.

oh just to keep this thread relevant my latest batch are a bunch of fast trackers lol... not to many of them but already sporting their first headstripes & only 11 days old.

Nice new clutch was laid last night, pretty good sized one. I hope to get to some of the plumbing over the weekend for the project; Gresham if your around today or maybe this weekend let me know.

A big thanks to Gresham & Chad for stopping by on Friday & helping me get a plan together for the plumbing & sump system

over the weekend i did manage to get the one tank a little further along; using some krylon fusion black spray paint i blacked out the middle sections of the tank the idea is that i want the broodstock to be concentrating on each other & not their neighbors hopefully it works out ok, even with all the taping and double checking i did have some paint leak through & of course it would have to be on the front viewing pane as well, it was actually to windy to be doing this part but when your crunched for time you go with what you can here are some pictures of what i'm babbling about:bounce3:

I have some micromesh that will remove that paint :) Better yet since there is no water, normal Novus will be just fine, and I have that as well.

Sounds like another Friday trip for me :)

Gresham i have some Novus all 3 stages i think; is the micromesh your talking about the same stuff used to buff out scratches in acrylic?
