I agree, my how this "hobby"(i use the term loosely) loves to keep you guessing. It's good to hear you seem to be getting better hatches. I think you deserve it to be as simple as not using th stability next time, and have a perfect hatch all the way through grow out :). I'll cross my fingers for ya agian!

win some lose some i guess; i can't say for sure that it was the issue, but it could have been, just thought i would give it a try and see what happened.

Ah ok. We have a product like that here called "Cycle" Snake oil IMO..

Snake oil in this hobby no way.
:rolleye1:

I have used it before on tanks that needed to be setup quickly and did not have the proper amount of time to do the cycle correctly, i wonder if the bacteria in there consumed the oxygen in the water and caused this last batch to go south?

HEHEHE This industry only exists to help us reefers, if they are lucky enough to make a dollar or to so be it. But to say they are selling products to only make money, that is... well that is prob the truth!

Now theres a idea, I see that as a viable cause.

The industry exists to help themselves not us. Don't fool yourself. There are alot of near useless or worse chemicals and additives that are sold as being everything from cure all's to wonder chemicals to make corals grow / fish to colour up and who knows what else.

If there were "live" bacteria in the bottle there would be a "best before" date would there not? Uh huh. :) I have no experience with that product in particular but if it sounds too good to be true...

I am figuring out which skimmer I want to go with, I am between the MSX250 and Octo 250. I realise that they are the same body and pumps, just that the MSX comes with a better wheel(and is a bit cheaper to boot!). I am leaning towards the Marine Solutions, long story short I see you are running a bit smaller MSX but was wondering your opinion on the skimmer/brand? Thanks in advance.

Good news Bad news (who would have guessed that)

Good: 100% hatch Sat. night.
Bad 99% dead Sun. morning

Not exactly sure what happened as there are a couple of things to mention:
1: I did use the same tank that i cleaned with bleach after the last group went south but i did rinse and rinse the tank with water. Tank was air dried outside for 4 days before use, and i also used prime in there as well.

2: I did try a different airstone to see what would happen it was a lee's wooden one can be used in skimmers etc. it produced a nice fine bubble mist & the eggs were not getting bashed around on the tile, it worked well as all of the eggs did hatch but i can not see how it would have not added oxygen to the water so there should not have been a oxygen depletion issue.

3: I had not added any rot's to the water yet so there is no chance that they fouled the water at all.

4: I did add some stability to the tank to try & see if it would help at all; i don't think it did and may have been the cause of the crash. (my best guess)

oh well; she laid down a nice new big batch of volunteers on Sunday night.

Did you use any Amquel? Amquel will deplete disolved oxygen during the first several hours. Im hoping to skip the use of amquel all together and rely on live rock as my filtration.

I know there is not hard evidence of what kills larva overnight but I believe its because of some disolved oxygen depletion whether it was the Stability or Amquel.

As for the bleach I dont think that was the problem but in the future using a low concentration of HCl like 1 normal is great for rinsing anything that you bleach.

I think the venturis are different on the two skimmers as well but i could be wrong, I still plan on ordering the new purple pw at some point i just have not gotten around to it yet. I have been very happy with the msx 160 that i have. i bought it used got a good deal dropped in in the sump and let it go to town:

No amquel used i have a bottle of it but i switched over to using the cloram-x a long time ago and have had much better success with keeping the ammonia in check:

I don't think the bleach was an issue either as i did use a mix of probably 6:1 and the tank was rinsed very thoroughly and air dried for a couple of days before use.
