Just got him yesterday so he is still getting used to the tank. Thought he was having problems, but i fixed the issues with teh flow and he is doing better. Mantle is coming out a bit more. He is certainly a little pickier than my maxima.

I got a little derasa like that a few months ago, and he never opened up more than that one. He was dead within a week.

Now, 2 weeks ago I got one that is about 3 1/2 inches long and he is doing great and fully open. Good luck with the little guy!

what do you think caused the problem with your derasa? Mine is staying the same as far as mantle extension, but seems to be doing fine otherwise.

clownfishman, from what I have gathered, there is nothing wrong with my derasa some just open up more than others. Did you post pics of yours?

I think that the little derasas have a hard time handling all of the stress that comes with shipping and acclimation. I have a friend who got one the same size on the same day I got mine (they were both from the same shipment) and his is dead now too. I assume that yours should be fine if it is still alive at this point.

very interesting. Yeah, it is doing great so far as I can tell. It has been at the LFS (not sure of the policy here about giving names of LFS...) But if I could I would rave about this place. The owner is a great fella and really pays careful attention to what he brings in and takes acceptional care of his inventory. It has gotten to the point when going to his store is a family outing...

Anyway, the point is that I was fortunate enough to find one local that I liked. The whole shipping thing sounds pretty dicey at times.

I have two. I got one 6mths ago and this one opened up almost immediatly, and really started growing when it finally found a spot it liked. I jusy got a smaller 3" one last week and it is just now starting to extend. Mine were both shipped. The 2nd had a 2 week QT stay so this extra moving could be the issue

I noticed last night that my derasa is much more open and the mantle is extended quite a bit more. Nothing like the maxima, but still looks healthy.

I got both of mine at the same LFS. When I said they don't like shipping I meant from the farm out in the pacific to the dealer. The stress of it all gets to some of them and they never recover.

I'm glad to hear that yours is opening up more.

Thanks, I am really happy with my derasa and it continues to color up better and it is really nice and open. My maxima is also doing well. I gotta say I really love having clams. When other people see my tank that is the first thing they notice. I am considering getting a crocea sometime in the future (keep your fingers crossed).

I had a derasa that size, it didnt open much the first 5-7 days, kept moving, and kept falling on its side. Then finally it found a nice spot on the sand, dug a nice little spot and sat there, then it finally opened with a nice mantle extension.

Once they've acclimated they are strong buggers.

Yep. Thank you. So far he is doing great and seems to be pretty well adjusted. Moved things around in my tank to free up some room so he has more room now.

New pic from last night. The first is my Derasa and the second is my maxima. I am not sure about the color of the Derasa and may be moving it a little higher in the tank or something. The blues are fading a little (but the pink is getting brighter).

The colors on the derasa look fine to me. I wouldn't move him because that stresses them out and they don't need much light. I got a derasa that looked just like that a couple months ago and put it at the bottom of my reef under 250 watt halides. His color has now intensified to almost an orange color with blueish purple spots. What lights are you running? Really nice maxima too!

The lights are 150W MH. The tank is an AP24 so the light isn't all that high above the clam either. In comparing the before and after pictures i think what I am actually seeing is that the pink has become more pronounced (which makes the other colors look less pronounced. So I think I should still be in good shape).
