It rapidly grows algae that can be scraped off and thrown away. It is an easy way to remove phosphate and nitrate. Also raises ph by the algea using co2 and creating 02.
It has to be, look how much growth that is. I still run gfo but im sure my use will go down. If I had room for a bigger scubber I doubt gfo would be necessary.
