it dont need to be 3/4 because its not that tall of a box. the 1/2" will be just fine on there. because the acrylic is not tall enought to flex that much when under pressure.

I really wasn't thinking of flex so much as joint-strength.
Thicker material equals stronger joints.

I was also worried that over a half ton of weight might distort
1/2-inch acrylic over a long period of time.

Worries aside, I can't wait to see photos of this guy in action.

if you think about it, a fish tank has bigger panels and has just as much water in it. so the smaller panels will make it just as strong. don't worry about it. this skimmer is over built. the seams were soaked in Weldon 4 a lot longer than most seams are on tanks. I have seen a lot of shotty construction on tanks and skimmers. this is one of the best built skimmers ever. I just wish Bill would hurry up and post his pic. it would really put things in perspective.

Is the ETA on this skimmer tied to the ETA on those URI T5's that Ash is taking so much heat over in the IceCap forum?

Seriously though, I am very anxious to see what this thing is capable of. I'm sure Bill is even more anxious though. I know I get super rushed towards the end of a DIY, especially when I think its going to work!

think about it this way. this skimmer is 25.5" in diam. thats an odd size tube. so all the parts have to be custom made to fit that odd size. not an easy task. he wants this skimmer finnished as much as you guys do. but everything takes time. and bill wants this perfect the first time. and i agree with him. how ever long it takes to make it right the first time. he is waiting on the cone to get milled down to fit his flanges. thats going to be a tough thing to do. his cnc wont cut a cone that big. neither will any other piece of equiptment that he has. so a machine shop had to be hired to mill it down. and they are never fast. i fugure it should be up and running some time this week. you also have to rember that its getting nice out now. and the ferrari is just begging to be driven.

Did you put some kind of reflective spray on your license plate? So people can see it, but cameras can't..

hey thats a good idea! some one could make millions selling that stuff to ferrari owners. ha ha ha ha i know its tough to get that car out of 3rd gear. it does about 70 in third gear with 3 more to go. its way too easy to get that car going 100mph. you feel like your going 40 when you actually going 100. if i owned a car like that i would need a good lawyer. ha ha ha ha

hard to pass up a good day when you have that kind of rag-top teasing you!

BTW, my '63 Impalla did 70 mph in first gear! OK, OK...I'll admit it didn't have any exhaust pipes. And I burned a combo of aeronaughtical (sp?) fuel and toluene. And it could rev past 8,000...and there was no back seat....

I have a good friend from highschool that has one of those...a F355 spyder. Fun car from the 90's, paved the path for the sexiest Ferrari ever made...the 360 (IMO, lol). My buddy's F355 is yellow though. Ahhhh... many fun times in that car...

Spazz, you do realize you could get a can of reflective license plate paint in any auto supply store for a couple bucks...

That is one sweet car. Man. Yes, I'm jealous. But at the same time, glad it isn't in my driveway, since we get hail here. ;)

Ferraris on a track at wide open throttle going down a straight make by far the sexiest sound I've ever heard a car make. And a factory Ferrari is pretty impressive on track, easily competes with a lot of spec race cars.

i know bill is on the hunt for the 360 medina but cant find the right one. he cant stand the f1 pattle shifter on them. so he wants the standard 6 speed. i agree with him that pattle shifter is dumb. but everyone wants them. i dont know jack about ferrari's other than they slap you in the back of the head alot. ha ha ha ha especially when bill is driving. ha ha ha ha

Dude, the paddle shifter is awesome!!! IMO, every manual car should have them.

The 'smack in the back of the head' thing rocks. When I was 25 I lived with one of the guys who founded hyperformance sport tuning locally (and was a SCCA club racer, F1 pit crew member, etc). We stuck a T4 turbo into a 99 miata, slicks, limited slip rear, etc. (but beyond the 4 gauges on the pillar, it was totally stock looking) One of the funnest cars to drive EVER! We took it downtown and found my buddy with his 355 at a trendy club. We challenged him to a race...

The miata smoked the ferrari, and the whole time the turbo was louder than the actual engine. Eventually, we cranked up the miata so high that we send the valves through the hood a year or two later, but until that point it never broke down...we pushed it too far.

Just want to point out that 'smack in the back' can easily be had for waaaay cheaper than an italian car and the mechanic that it needs to come with (My parents have a few italian ponies in the stable as well. ..upkeep is a PITA).
