Seems like a reverse under gravel filter. Few people run those and have great success.
Personally I'm in the camp with no filter socks. Really dislike that whole concept and something I avoided with my recent sump purchase. Looks pretty cool OP. Good luck!
Interesting read. Any updates? Thinking about putting one in play on about 600 gallons of display tanks at my store. Was also told that it will help eliminate free floating parasites and make UV more efficient.

So a lot has changed since I last updated this post. First of all I no longer have the 350 as I upgraded I now have a 10 ft 560 gallon tank with a 125 gallon sump. I also upgraded from that style of sand filter to a regular pool sand filter with a 1/3 hp motor. I like it way way better. For 1 I only back flush about once a week if that and it wAy easier. I still back flush with fresh water by having a large tote under my tank that I have plumbed into the pump. I just fill the tote with freshwater and switch valves so that the return from the tank is closed and the valve from tote is open. My water stays really clear for the most part as long as I don't feed to much frozen mysis. I'm setting up to run ozone next week to cure that. I'm also just doing fish only now. I got an angel addiction since upgrading tanks so I'm not to worried about the nitrates and I also plan on setting up a big scrubber to combat that. I will say with the pool sand filter there's no detritus floating around! Lol. It's amazing how fast it can clear the water up if I stir the substrate up. 15 mins and it's clear again from clowdy. I'll have to take some pics some time. Pump that feeds the sand filter is 300 watts if any of you are wondering.
