My first buy from Divers Den

No experience with tangs either but I agree that's a nice fish. II just got my 1st DD order (Potters in my avatar) a month or so ago and it was a great experience all around!

jsf668,

Acanthurus pyroferus ... nice fish. These are definitely not an aggressive tang at all. I think the mimic part ... fools most of the other Acanthurus species ... and for the most part the other tangs did not give it too much notice..

It is good that the Kole is smaller ... that will help the cause for the new comer.

Make sure that it is eating well before you move it out of the qt .... and if possible I would net the kole and qt him for a day .. to let the newcomer time to settle in.

Good luck with yours.

Cheers,
Bruce

Very nice looking fish. My suggestion is to use a container for 3 days when its introduced into the DT so you can monitor the aggression.

Thanks, I think it is a great looking fish too. I have been wanting one for awhile now and recently lost a 10yo Yellow Tang and this was a perfect opportunity to get it. It will be going into a 29g QT and I wont move into the DT until it is eating very well. As far as netting the Kole Tang..that will be impossible..He is by far the smartest Tang I have ever had. I don't stand a chance in catching him.

I see large acclimator (clear plastic type) go for around $60-80 and Marine Depot carry them.

But I built mine for $2 (Walmart) plus some old eggcrate free from lfs and couple of plastic ties to cover some of the holes. Since your fish is 4.5" it's not coming out of those holes so you just need one piece to cover the top.

Here's my 4.5" Regal in it for 3 days before release and also done it with a 6" Goldflake

I added a small chocolate tang to a 180gal with an established kole tang (kole tang is about double the size of the chocolate). The kole kicked up a big fuss and got his 'war paint' on, but didn't actually touch the chocolate. The new little guy backed right down and within a day they were absolutely fine. they've been together for around 3 months now, and I've never seen a problem.

The fish don't get stressed living in such small, bare quarters for 3 days? I'd at least provide a piece of LR... Instead of weighing it down with a rock on top, you can weigh it down with a rock from inside to provide some shelter and something to graze on. Still 3 days seems like a long time for a 4" Acanthurus tang to spend in a tiny box, but that's jmo.

I have the exact same fish and it gets along with my yellow tang no problem. This or the convict tang is definitely the most mild mannered acantharus, so you shouldn't have problems long term.

I would think the Tang would be very stressed in such a small container for 3 days. I have used the mirror trick and that has always worked in the past. Well, he is scheduled to arrive tomorrow and I hope it isn't to cold out. The fish is coming from Wisconsin and I live right on the border so it shouldn't be to bad. Unfortutetly..I wont be feeling well tomorrow and will be home for the delivery. ;)

Rather than putting the new guy in a container i like to use eggcrate to just divide the tank. This way he's out swimming around and exploring the tank, finding all the good nooks and crannies to dart into if he ends up being chased when I remove the barrier, already has a good sleeping spot, etc. And then still gives the benefit of visual acclimation on everyone else in the tank.
