My first zoa, is it OK?

Is my zoa sick? It has this weird growth that seems to be taking over a few of the polyps.

Anyone know what this is?

Thanks. I moved them up higher in the tank to address the light issue. Whatever the growth is, it is pretty solidly connected to the zoo. I wasn't able to dislodge it with a toothbrush, although I was being rather cautious. I'll go at it a bit harder this evening, unless anyone has another suggestion.

Thanks,
David

Might want to try tweezers and pull it off. It kinda looks like sponge to me as well......Sometimes sponges will irratate them and when the sponge dies so do the polyps due to the rot being so close to the polyps.....

Thanks Azurel. I was able to remove it using tweezers. Whatever it was had a nice crunchy sound when pinched by the tweezers.

Your zoanthids really are in need of light, current, and weekly vitamin and amino acid additions wouldn't hurt.

Why lighting? The two polyps on the right front have little or no coloration at all. They appear compltely bleached due to expelling. Most likely due to a lack of lighting do to improper placement on the reef, or simply an oversight which didn't give them enough lighting.

Why Current? The same two polyps have little or no polyp extension as well as all of the other polyps in the photo. Consistent or alternating current will carry more nutrients directly to them thus increasing polyp length over time.

Why Vitamins and amino acids? And I know many reefers have never used it and their tanks look absolutely great. I draw the same parallel with humans. Without added daily vitamins to your diet, you can live a happy, long, prosperous and healthy life. With Vitamins, your overall health will receive great internal and external benefits. I have used them for many many years. I can't remember the last time I had a sick , polyp, colony or frag. My failure rate is nonexistent now. Creetin, if you are there, share your experience with this as well. My polyps are always full and robust. I have purchase frags that were in dire straights and have recovered rapidly in my tank. Can I prove that V & A's make a difference, well, yes and no. Do I have a very healthy population of corals that appear healthy 24/7 ? Yes. Can I prove it is because of the additions of Vitamins and amino acids, no, not directly. But I can say that since I started using it years ago, my tank has never looked better.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Mucho. I adjusted current so that they slowly sway back and forth, whereas before they had no movement. They are now 3/4 of the way up in a 29g tank with 72w of PC lighting and look a little bit better already. I'm upgrading my lighting to 144w of PC. I assume this will be sufficient to grow happy zoos.
