my how 'PERSPECTIVES' change over time!!!

hello

we are looking into upgrading our system...

originally were planning on going w/ a 210gal tank
6ft x 29" high

but when compared to our current 125
5ft x 26high

there really is not that much difference...
just a lil longer and lil higher.

in fact w/ what we already have in the tank
it would just allow a little bit more viewing room and swimming area for fish...

hardly seems worth it to invest in that little of an upgrade ???

has anyone been in the same boat???

funny once get immersed in the hobby
how 'perspectives' change... the thought of a 210gal tank when first started was more of a dream (started out w/ a 125reef)... looking at it now not good enuff!

then factor that in w/ my freshwater days
when did african cichlids and a 125 (goal) was probably how i would now view a 300gal reef!

took me forever to get up to a 125 -
after years of 20, 29, and what then was the 'goal' the standard 55 available at petco/kmart!... then we started out w/ a 60gal saltwater fowlr tank back in '97 and that seemed like a HUGE tank at the time (wet/dry sump - bioBALLS which was pretty advanced stuff back then)

i am lucky that my wife sees the same logic and was actually the first to point it out re 125-210 upgrade...

240+..........
here we come!!!... hopefully sooner then later but will know here in few weeks!

;)

I feel the same way. I once thought that my 75 was huge. A 125 was just a dream for the future. Now I'm thinking the upgrade in a few years needs to be in the 200 range at least.

perhaps has something to do w/ the 'addiction' factor ???

the more addicted we become the more broad our thinking becomes to satisfy it!... or it takes 'more, more, more' to satisfy!

(like a crackhead - instead a reefhead?)

a 75 is a still a good sized tank
we have an empty 75 sitting in the garage... cant have that now... must put something in it or turn it into a fuge!
;)

From a 125 to a 210 you also go from 18" deep to 24" deep which is a nice upgrade.

a 210 is a sweet tank!
especially w/ the added depth... since started reefing have been eyeing one... compared to our 125 though - just a few inches larger in all directions... for us to go up to a 240+ sized tank would be like many who upgrade from say a 55 to a 100/125 - more or less wanting to double the size of the tank, dimensions etc...

regards

I started with a 14g nano, convinced I could keep myself in check. Now I look at the space my 90g occupies and wonder if I could squeeze in a 5' x 2' x 2' 150g tank without anyone noticing... the only problem is, I'd have to invest in new lighting because of the longer tank, and I'd want to use my 90g as the sump which would probably necessitate a custom stand. Oh, and my husband would divorce me.

i bet you can make it fit w/out trying too hard either!
;)

interesting that you are into reefing and having to convince your husband to upgrade (need i say its usually the other way around?)... ya the liting is a key issue in upgrading... too funny about using your 90gal as a sump bec was trying to figure out how we could incorporate our 125 into a new system as either a fuge or fuge/frag tank lol

are we all hopelessly addicted or what???
:D

Honestly, it's a sickness.

And yes, I feel like a minority -- not a lot of women out there are into reefs, and fewer still have husbands who turn down upgrades. So many men seem to want a huge, macho tank; my hubby is the sensible one, and says we need things like food, rent and bills paid for before we invest another $5000 or so in a bigger tank. He's just no fun! :P

exactly why my name is ;)

I'm hoping to go to a 210 by summer. I have finally convinced my husband to get rid of the entertainment center in our livingroom, we have a pool table in there and no one ever watches that tv anyways we are always in the family room. So now I get to plan yet another tank. :D

if you can fit it, always get an 8 foot tank. This opens up a lot of possibilities for tangs :) a 210 is a nice size though. Its almost double a 125 (thats a big difference!)

think that name is contagious w/ many around here!
iow we are all 'reeferheads'
   :D ;)

in contrast to changing perspectives (over time)

how about skipping all the small change
and starting right out w/ a 600gal reef tank for first ever reef tank!!!

there is an RC member...
set up his firstever reef complete w/ massive tank build thread - 1000 gall system ? complete w/ frag tanks fuges etc etc etc (found in the large tank forum)

w/ all the 'learning experiences' have gone thru
w/ my first reef (125) - personally still think am atleast one upgrade away from attempting a 600gal... although i guess its all a matter of perspective ???

;)

I know what you are going through. I hope to upgrade my 125 in the next year. I went from wanting a 150 to 180 and now I'm at 240 contemplating 300. As you get further into the hobby, there is just so much more to want.

My reasoning for going up? I want my tang to have more room. Plus, if I get an 8 foot tank, I should be able to use the existing 125 for a sump to save money on the upgrade.

My fiance' and I have put it on hold until we get 4 fans installed (kitchen, 2 x bath, and basement). I want to make sure I have no moisture problems. He's still not to comfortable with larger tanks, but it is my money and he doesn't mind bragging.

I also think your mindset changes as you get larger tanks. I 125gal looks huge to people who come to my house, but it looks normal to me now. Just like when I had a 12lb dog other dogs looked huge. Now that I have a 115 lb lab whose head comes to my waist, I look at most "large" dogs and think they are small.

My first tank was 210. I found myself planning an upgrade within 12 months.A further 18 months later and I have a 310. 6 months on I'm possibly moving house soon. I'm planning an upgrade.... !

hey there seems to be a 'case' of that going around
:D

and highly contagious at that!

I think it ends when you run out of room and the ability to afford a larger tank shelter (i.e. house). :D
True dat.
