My Ich Experience

you guys are pretty rediculous...... This guy was just stating what he did to remove the ich from his tank. I dont give a crap if you have a masters degree because guess what... it has nothing to do with marine biology!!!! hey guys i have an associates degree in criminal justice and am working on my BS and then im magically a marine biologist? you know what, hes right, i agree completely, with me being in the military and deploying all the time i cant have a quarantine tank because that is just toooooo much for my wife to deal with while i am gone. It is bad enough she has to take care of a 110 gallon tank which on a tall bench i cannot even come close to getting things that are on the bottom. So guess what, reef safe treatments are what i swear by too. Just like humans, ONE WAY TO PREVENT CANCER IS TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE WHICH INCLUDES A VITAMIN ENRICHED DIET. so guess what.... Keeping your fish healthily fed with a good nutrition most likely will keep the ich off along with the help of a reef safe treatment. Being healthy is the ONLY way to have a good immune system, so, garlic along with vitamin supplements will do the trick. No one cares how you killed your ich by keeping them in a quarantine tank for 6 months, i dont, in fact this thread is entitled "my ich experience" so that people my learn from things he did and try them. I didnt read the thread title to be "i kept my fish in a quarantine tank for 6 months then released them back to the display, oooooops , a drip of infected water dropped in, guess i have to start over...." if it said that i wouldnt have read this. People come here for help and advice and social networking not to be rediculed by people who probably arent capable as half of us here......... keep your negative opinions to yourself. Go to another saltwater forum website if you cannot because i love coming here and it makes me upset when it happens. mike

Did not mean to upset you
Not rediculaous at all. Most are trying to give reasoned advice and to challenge that which is thought to be unreasoned and which if tried might lead to inadequate or harmfull treatment.

Good Luck and from an Army vet 67-70, a sincere Thankyou for your servioce,

my whole point was, to be open to other ways of killing ich and tackling it. i am trying my hardest to fight it without starting a quarantine tank for the reasons I stated. The same way scientists do to prove hypothesis', this guy tried something new and it worked for him. The only way we can learn other ways of fighting diseases in general is trial and error. so, when I read his experience it gave me some insight on other ways to fight this, then to read all the comments just angered me from some pretty ignorant people to something new. why not just say, well, glad it worked for you, I don't agree with it though, and that's that. I'm over it now LoL, going to try hypo salinity LoL. tried the reef safe treatments, and, they probably did work on killing the free swimming rich, also bought UV sterilizer!

Mike, I honestly have tried many ways to kill ich over the years. The problem with adivising folks to try unproven ways to do it is that while they are doing this the fish will either develop and immunity on their own which happens in some but not all cases or they will become more heavily infested and die and in either case the ich will persevere in the tank and may kill new fish.
. If you go back over the posts you will see that I think people should tell their stories about encounters with ich and things they have tried and do value these anecdotal accounts because a new way to treat ich would be a major improvement in the hobby. However, when a poster claims a "new alternative cure" and there is no real information to back it up and then claims academic credientials and expands comments about the experience then this becomes more than sharing an experience but a claim to a disovery which will work for everyone. This then requires debate and solid backup information. There just isn't any way around it, in my opinion. If this type of claim is unchallenged then everyone reading it might with good reason accept it as fact.

Good Luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance. BTW I don't think the folks who argued this are ignorant maybe a tad passionate.

some comments were made out of ignorance lol. anyways, i could use some help lol, come to my house and kill the ich!!!! lol anyone?

TMZ,

The companies selling their "reef-safe" and other ich wonder drugs should be forced to prove that their treatments work in well designed randomized, double-blind controlled scientific studies. This is what is required for human medicines. The public is being ripped off by the companies peddling this junk.

:) Absolutely. Even more irritating is that these "treatments" cause delays or absence of usefull treament and due to the nature of the parasite often appear effective and benefit with more sales from what is apparently a placebo effect.

No thanks to the trial and error method, I will stick with what works. The word ignorant means lack of understanding. The lack seems to be upon you. You bash others and call names then ask for help. Hope I didn't hurt your feelings though.

But whatever you do, don't call it snake oil, that's not PC you know.

lol, read through the comments, there are some IGNORANT remarks. you wont hurt my feelings lol, it would take alot more than what you are capable of!

trial and error is how the genius' of the world are created... a simple minded person would be afraid of attempting it.

I don't think anyone needs to be "put in their place" and a disscussion forum is not the place to start a fight in an attempt to do it in any event. I was respectfull to you after your initial post because you seemed upset and I thought you had the wrong take on the discussion but don't think I was put in my place. Some of the comments mine included were passionate sharp and perhaps a bit acerbic but not acrimonious and certainly not ignorant. This is not a personal issue. The discussion is geared to bring out the facts and to enable effective interventions. The contributors did that well enough that adeqaute information is available for most aquarists to make their own decisons in an informed way or if they choose in an ignorant way.

Gary, Snake oil is just not a phrase I think it is overused and really doesn't mean anything. I do not value political correctness at all and
prefer straight talk.

So maybe to get back on track with the discussion of experience with Ich...

I have had a tang in QT from day 1 that came down with Ich about 2 weeks in. I was not treating the QT for anything, just giving him a stress-free environment.

After noticing the ich, I then applied Hypsalinity, by dropping the SG to 1.009 slowly over 3 days. After keeping the tang there for 3 weeks and only seeing it get worse, I then started to medicate with "Ruby Reef's" Kick-Ich. I have been applying that for about 1 week now and still am not seeing any real results.

There seems to be a lot of experience (and trial and error) in this, so what would any of you recommend as my next step?

- Continue treatment of Kick-Ich for next week?
- Switch over to Cupramine? (If so I must clean my tank out of the Ruby Reef?)

or finally... Just give up? hahaha

lol, i didnt see any results from ruby's, but it only kills the free swimming ich, so, once they fall of if he doesnt get it again then it worked. but, if you have a qt, then because i dont think my rubys worked either i would switch to what everyone knows works, copper treatment!
