My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

I just snapped my ORA red planet off the rock thinking it was surely dead since it has been ghost white since installing the Radion. Much to my dismay, it started sliming and surely smells like it is still alive. So I tossed it in a nook down at the bottom of the rockwork and hope to see it come back. If it does that is the 2nd ORA SPS frag that went from dead to fully alive again! Point is, hold onto that SPS even if you think it's a hopeless cause, they are more resilient then you think.

I think my clown has brain damage since snuggling up in the frogspawn. He snuggles into the zoas constantly, to the point where his markings are starting to turn black on the bottom. He also acts lethargic a lot of the time. I have been looking at an ORA premium picasso lately, and am hoping it's enough to get him back into shape!

The Radion honestly has all of my corals looking better then they have ever looked. Growth is more normal instead of "search for light" formation like it used to take. Polpy extension is insane. Now that things are recovering from the initial bleaching, the color is starting to get awesome again.

I've been bumping up intensity slowly, I have a 2-hr mid day peak that I bump for a half a week. Then I bump the full 8-hr light period to that intensity. Then bump mid day by 5% again. It's been working well and up to 35% for mid day.

What I bought as a tricolor valida, but I am 100% convinced is an ORA Bellina now:

Looking good, brutha'! Loving your shots too! What kind of camera/lens you using? They are very clear shots with good coloring.

Thanks buuuuudy! Believe it or not, all of the pics are taken on my EVO 3G cell phone... I haven't busted out the DSLR in a long time and keep procrastinating on getting a macro lens for it since I use up all my play money on the tank! :)

My coral banded shrimp and coral beauty angel are about to get flushed!! The coral beauty has a new whim for biting clams and corals consistently, but I have been unsuccessful in catching it despite many attempts. The CBS always acts aggressive but that SOB bit me when I stuck my hand in the tank earlier so it's the end of the road for that fella...

Now just to figure out how to catch them, CBS should be easy, but the CB angel is going to be elusive. May just drain the tank.

Ange - sorry to hear about the issues with the shrimp and CB. Have you tried a fish trap? There's quite a few DIY traps that can be made, or you can buy a "reef gently" device, which serves many purposes, aside from a fish trap. It's also an excellent acclimating device for anything reef related.

This sucker has been the hardest fish to catch!! I have tried on many occasions already by netting, netting at night, and various types of DIY traps but never had any success. I have literally caught every other fish in the tank trying to catch the angel!!

That's why I was thinking about draining the tank, supposed to be a fairly easy way to catch an illusive fish. Supposedly you just dig a hole in the sand, and drain the tank, and all the fish will move to the hole eventually and you scoop the one you want up. I know the corals would be fine, but I have a feeling I would end up with fish stuck in the rocks rather then in the hole.

Thanks for the link, I'll have to look into that as it sounds easier then draining :)

I'm not so sure about disturbing a SB that has been setup for some time..

Just found this thread, looks good! Did you get your top made yet? if not, i'd try to get it made of glass, i had a 55g tank with 1/4 acrylic covers and they bowed and didn't look good after a while, plus it is alot easier to scratch. Keep up the good work!

Great thread ange you have done a great job of mixing the soft, LPS and SPS nice tank. I really like the new Yellow Yantana and Bellina sweet. How has your Borealis done I heard they can be a toss up?

I haven't had a top made yet, I got used to the topoff amount and it hasn't really been bothering me. Don't currently have any jumpers either, though I did find a cerith snail on the floor one day (it actually survived, I threw it back in the tank and it was fine). One of these days I'll make a template and get glass cut, thanks for the tip on acrylic and the kind words!

Thanks!! Although I like the balance of SPS, LPS, and softies I am definitely on an SPS kick and have been moving more and more in that direction! The bellina and lantana are both really cool, and are starting to really color up. They should look great in about a month. Even the blue mille is starting to color up from brown to green. The borealis was a slow grower under the PC's, but after an initial bleaching from the Radion growth has really exploded on it and it's starting to color back up!
