My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

Honestly, you have the best looking ricordia I've seen anywhere, and your FTS, in my opinion, is the best on reef central, this tank looks buff, well done. On a different note, I saw a pair of platinum clowns for sale at my LFS and thought of you and your designers! However I didn't fell like handing over $400 for the pair!!!!!

Thanks moore! Really appreciate the compliments on the tank, but if you look around some more you will quickly realize it's far from the best FTS on RC, LOL!!

The rics always look insane in macro shots, they look so bright colored and surreal straight out of the camera, when I first started shooting them I was shocked. I think they really like the LED's :bounce1:

And $400 is steep! My LFS was asking $250 for my pair and hooked me up on them for $200. :)

Oh, and despite my lack of success with fish (though I have great fortune with SPS apparently), I decided to give it a go on another. Finally caved in to all the non-reefers wanting a beautiful mandarin! I got an ORA green spot, big fat and healthy after a couple months of me watching him at my trusty LFS. I have him in his isolation box and he was already grubbing on cyclopeeze on tonights feeding, saw him snag at least 12 of them. So, even though my tank should be very well seeded with copepods, I feed frozen daily and this dood should do well if he doesn't get eaten by other fish. He goes by Yoshi, BTW.... :)

Hopefully this question makes sense. I'm following your model and want to install both the reactor and the JBJ chiller into my JBJ 28G. Do I need 2 additional pumps? If so, how did you get them to fit into the tank?

Appreciate your help!

Is yoshi a Mario reference? I love mandarins for their peculiar behavior. Did you get the green or spotted mandarin?

You know it is!! :) It's a spotted, I'll try to snag a picture tonight. Had a bit of an upset getting him into the tank but all is well now, he is chillen at the back of the tank picking pods off the back wall and rocks. Nobody seems to be bothering him, which is good!

Ange im planing on getting single LF Phosban 150 unit and one of the Ehaim pumps.
I will be running only one reactor and carbon in the media basket. should i get the 300 or 600 pump? do you restrict the flow on the 600?
Also what Phosban media you use?
Did the reactor came with a hose or not?

Thanks.

I think the 300 is probably adequate, I had to choke off the flow quite a bit on the 600. Buuuut, unlike some other pumps, even with highly limited flow the thing is DEAD SILENT so you might as well spend the extra couple of bucks and be prepared for anything. The reactors don't come with hose, just pick up a couple feet of Lee's black pond tubing 1/2" ID from any LFS and you will be set. I alternate between actual TLF Phosban and BRS HC GFO.

All the info is in this thread, but I know it's a lot to search through so I will summarize. Chiller runs off stock right side Accela pump, pump flows directly to chiller then back to the stock display return. One suggestion is to add a dry-break quick disconnect to make cleaning the chiller easier.

Reactors require an additional pump, per above I recommend an Eheim Compact600 for this, it fits nicely in the skimmer chamber.

wow nice !!!!

Thanks!!!

Yoshi has settle in really well, nobody is bothering him and he searches around the back of the tank constantly eating pods. He is really camera shy though, and bolts every time I try to get a picture so no photo updates yet :(

In the interim, more corals shots!

Awesome on Yoshi! Do you spot feed him? I do twice a day and he swims right up to eat. I have started seeding my tank with Copepods due to him slimming down a little bit.

I can't wait to see a picture of Yoshi!

Beautiful tank!

Thanks for the comment!

I haven't tried spot feeding him yet, he is still pretty shy so when he sees me walking towards the tank he hides back in the rockwork. I have seen him out nipping at broadcast fed cycloeeze though. I can't wait to snag a pic of him either! But it may be a few weeks before he settles in enough.

love your tank! Have you increased the intensity of your lighting as of late? Any plans on doing so if you haven't?

Thanks!! Lighting is at 70% for 8-hrs, lower intensity for sunrise/sunset for another couple of hours. No plans to change, color and growth are great so I don't see a need to.

I'm really struggling with the ORA hyacinth birdsnest! It grows so freaking fast that it's always touching everything around it. Plus the added weight and flow restriction from growth keeps causing the rock it's on to tumble over and it's getting on my last nerve. I am thinking about fragging out the entire colony, removing the rock that it's on all together, and slapping a couple of stags (green slimer and this sweet green base / blue tip) on the base rock below it right behind the hoek and just letting them grow to fill the area back in all the way up to the waters surface. Added bonus is the brighter colors behind the hoek would really make it pop. It's such a beautiful piece but very understated in an FTS.

For those that may not be familiar, the hoek is the super-slow-growing deep blue stag at middle-right.

This is what the hyacinth looks like up close, but from further away it just kind of looks brown honestly:

Coral growing too fast is a good problem to have, it means you're a great reef keeper! Which you certainly are. I don't want to jack this thread and I tried looking through it to find the answer with no luck, but how did you mount the Radion inside the hood? I'm eventually going to purchase one so I figured I should just get it over with =) I'll probably snag one in the next month so and I'd like to keep my lid, so any tips/details you can give me would be much appreciated! Keep up the good work boss!

Tank is looking very, very nice. Great job

Thanks Steph!!

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't complain, LOL! I put up details on the fixture a while back, though I know this thread is huge and a lot to search through!! Summary is that I went hoodless and mounted the fixture from the ceiling. I don't think mounting in the hood is feasible because it needs to be higher up off the water, mine is 9" up.

WOW, I just read this from start to finish, still wowed, I am looking at your signature and your take is exactly what I am looking to do, I am wondering what your current setup looks like, stand tank, lights etc. Would it be possible to give a Noob a little tour and what you got going on?

Dang, I did that once and it took hours getting to page 21!

Ange, your tank made me try my first SPS. Sunset milli and a green base and blue tip tenuis. :)
