My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

Well, I had my first two casualties today. There were a couple flower anemone's that came on my GSP rock, and one of them appears to have been blown out of it's hole by the MP10 and was in the skimmer grate. Also, one of my hermits has a shiny new Astrea shell...

Tank is looking real good. Very nice frogspawn. The candy cane looks sweet too. Its funny i have both of those two and mine look so differn't then yours.
I lucked out and got a nice Elegance Coral for $25. It looks great and hope it does well ( i read there hit and miss on living)
? on the dosing. Do you think you need to be dosing already. I test my Cal and with the water changes it right or a little high. Also my banded shrimp has molted 3 times already so i would think the iodine is ok. From what i read until you have a real stocked tank the water changes should be good.

Great looking tank and i'm following it too.

I had a weird day today. My LFS tested my water, and was high on phosphate and a spike on nitrite, which both sounded weird to me. I brought my water to the fancy shop, nitrite and phosphate came up clean but ammonia was high. Everybody still seems happy so I am going to bring a water sample in to a 3rd shop tomorrow and do my weekly water change since it's due.

Don't think I have anything to worry about, probably just some bunk tests, or we can hope at least. I haven't added anything that would cause a cycle so I think it's just a fluke.

Yes the test might be a fluke. But i thought i read you lost an anemone and a snail. That might be why your ammonia might be high. I would do the water change and retest the water. Are you testing the water or just the LFS?

Ahhh yes, good point. I forgot about the little hitchhiker anemone that came on my LR, that's a possible explanation. Doing a water change this afternoon then bringing in some water to the LFS to test it.

I don't have test kits (silly I know) but have been taking in water 2x a week to the LFS to have it checked.

So I've seen a couple of disturbing events in the past few days.

1) A hermit in an astrea shell, which means a homicide most likely took place
2) Caught my CBS nearly grabbing my damsel in a territorial dispute
3) Saw my emerald literally clamping down on a nassarius

I'm beginning to understand why people don't like keeping crabs and CBS. Hopefully this phase passes over and everything calms down, or I may have to start looking at getting the CBS/Emerald back to the LFS...

Planning to order strontium, calcium, and iodine to start dosing. Also getting some zooplankton and phytoplankton for the corals. At the same time I will be getting an AquaC Remora HOB Skimmer with a RIO800 pump. Next week should be good!

I don't think your bioload would require dosing yet. Unless you are testing for it and it's being depleted rapidly, I'd stick to water changes.

Did a water change on Sunday, tested water, and everything was back to normal. 0 Ammonia / Nitrite, about 5ppm nitrate. Phosphates were reading just under 1ppm, but hopefully I can keep that in check with the weekly water changes.

I guess the weird spike I saw was either from the dead snail&anemone, or just a fluke in readings at the LFS.

What duration do you guys/gals run your lights? I ran for 4-hrs during the cycle to keep the hitchhiker corals alive (which are spreading like mad now after my mini-cycle!!).

I've been running 8-hrs a day since the cycle finished and I started adding corals.

I have so far:
  • 1 small branch candy cane
  • 1 large candy cane
  • 1 medium frogspawn
  • 1 medium GSP
  • 2 small/med zoa colonies
  • several small to medium shroom colonies
  • 1 small tree softie
  • various macro algae

I've started alternating phytoplankton and zooplankton once a week each. Wondering if I need to up the lighting to 9 or 10-hrs also. Thoughts?

Nice pics! Are you going to add anymore fish?

Thanks, really happy with the way it's coming along so far. My LFS got a bunch of tiny mandarins in and he is training them to eat pellet food. If they take, I plan to pick one up next week and be done in the fish department. If that doesn't play out, I am not sure...

I do have a xenia on order, and plan to do a couple more corals before I just let it all grow out. It's an addiction, ya know??? :)

Here is a vid:

Tank looks great.

I run my lights between 6-8 hrs a day on the week days and 8-10 on the weekend.

Also i would stay away from the mandarin fish. They really need a tank thats been going for a while. i've read and chatted with a bunch that say its the 2nd-3rd hardest fish to keep.

Also watch your load. Don't want to add to much to quick. I know its addictive but take it slow. You don't want your bacteria to get overloaded to fast.

I saw the coolest thing last night!! I was walking by the tank just in time to notice a little activity out of the corner of my eye, so I stopped to watch.

I saw my skunk cleaner jumping onto my coral beauty for a cleaning session!! It didn't last long, the angel seemed to get a little scared, but it was a good start. Can't wait to see more of this, it was literally one of the coolest things I have seen happen in my tank yet.
