My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

I would highly reccomend not getting in the habit of not checking water parameters in a tank this small, mine is recovering from me doing the same thing, went 3 weeks without testing and in that time my nice acro stopped having PE, by that time, it was too late, lost that, my derassa, my birdsnest frag and my cotton candy hydro...my monti cap is looking like it will recover. After water parameters having zero swing for 3 months in 3 weeks of no testing phosphate creeped up high enough to kill the sps(even fragging didnt save them). I think the clam is unrelated as it happened once I got the parameters all back in line(thinking something ate it tbh). I used to go 4-6 weeks without checking on my large tank.

Sounds like the clown will pull through, they are extremely hardy and if its just been lack of food you will be able to nurse it back to health

Thanks for the advice bwidner! I think I actually tested in the interim at my LFS but never recorded the values in my logbook since they were optimal. I'm pretty good about staying on top of it.

How's the clown doing?

He is still alive and eating well. I did a little reseach by typing "clownfish mouth stuck open" and it seems to be a fairly common problem. Due to the swelling and redness around his mouth it looks like a parasite problem. He should have a pretty good chance to pull through as long as he keeps eating. Keepin my fingers crossed...

Just came across a cheap PC replacement lamp at an LFS so bought it. They also had a good price on a 250w JBJ Viper HQI and now I'm seriously contemplating bringing back the lamp to go topless MH :-)

Read the thread start to finish. Great tank and great job. I just leak tested mine and can't wait to get moving on it. I hope it turns out a impressive as yours!

Very nice!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I found my swissguard basslet half eaten and stuck in my overflow. He hung out in the same little cave that my MIA firefish did, and I really suspect that either my hitchhiker mithrax or my emerald crab is to blame. :(

Nemo is still hanging in there and the swelling looks like it may be starting to subside.

I also replaced my stock CF lamp, but instead of placing the actinic side of it towards the rear I rotated so that it was at the front of the tank. I really like the look as it gives it more of a 14000k look, and also more accurately simulates depth as it's bluer in the deeper parts of the tank and whiter up top. Will post pics later.

The coral beauty has become really aggressive in the past few weeks, it has literally been picking on every other fish in the tank and starting to nip at corals. Its a weird change as it has always been very well behaved.

The black and gold damsel is almost as bad...

I spent about 3-hrs trying to get the damsel out last night to no avail, had a few close calls but you know that only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Going to try a few new tricks tonight and hope they work better.

I did fall in love with a forktail blenny at my LFS and couldn't help but bring it home. I also ordered up a potters angel. I think these should be awesome replacements for my two misbehaved specimens.

Managed to snag the damsel for transfer tonight, after a long battle! Tried feeding and netting her last night but didnt have any luck. Tonight I setup a plastic bag with fishing line lasso and used the food trick again. Took a bunch of patience but I finally managed to snag her!!

Here is the trap setup for action, notice the fishing line hanging out of the tank through the lid:

And success!! Have her in a quarantine / breeder box until I can transfer her tomorrow. Also notice how dark she has gotten since she was that beautiful bright yellow youngling:

It's amazing how much removal of one tank bully can change the dynamic of the whole tank! Just hours after caging the b&g damsel all 5 of my other fish are out and about! Look close, this is the most I have seen of my royal gramma and yellowtail damsel in months...

This tank nearly frustrated me to the point of PBITAWA today...

My LFS ordered me an awesome Potters Angel to replace my coral beauty which has turned super aggressive in the past few weeks. Due to their sensitivity, I took extra caution and time to acclimate then kept it in a breeder box to see how the tank would react. I knew mixed dwarf angels was bad, but decided to give it a try and release the potters while the lights were out to give him time to find a place to hide and settle in.

30min after release, I looked back to find the most epic fish battle I have ever seen! The CB was nonstop after the potters. After an hour of trying to catch either one, I finally netted the potters (of course) and put it back in the breeder box. I tried for a while longer to catch the CB to no avail.

Finally got fed up and decided to use the potters as bait to catch the CB again, and got close about 10 times but nothing and ended up catching the potters again. That dang CB is going to be impossible to remove!

To make things worse, Nemo took a turn for the worse and looks really bad today. After reading multiple things about adverse interaction with frogspawn (which he started sleeping under recently) I caught him and put him in the breeder box also and am keeping my fingers crossed he will look better by morning.

Anyway, goin to have to move the potters to my work tank until I can catch my rogue CB. Still resisting the urge to PBITAWA...

Oh, forgot to mention that I watched my coral banded shrimp eat a peppermint shrimp and that both angels have shredded fins now. FML...

It's funny, a couple hours in the breeder box and Nemo went from looking almost dead to almost 100%. Must be the frogspawn!

I'm going to move him and the potters to my 3g for now, and bring the maroon to the big tank and figure things out from there...

See, I TOLD YOU!
:D
I really like that fish.

Isn't the maroon real aggressive also?

Yeah, the blenny is really cool! It's always out in the open and moves in a really neat way, and it does this freaky thing to rest... It'll drop to the sand in a corner, and turn dark brown and looks dead. Sometimes it'll also just somehow "stick" itself to the glass right in the middle of the tank.

So Nemo is now 100% back to normal, it was definitely the frogspawn that was getting him sick. My LFS gave me $50 store credit for the coral. I'm looking to replace that spot with a varied color acan lord garden.

Maui the potters angel is now in my 3g at work until I manage to catch my coral beauty. In theory the maroon is aggressive but he didnt show any signs of it so far. The maroon is staying in the 3g and Nemo in the 28g now that I have removed the frogspawn.
