My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

I go 3-4 weeks. I do not redose and do not make water changes. Only top-off. I have used it in FOWLR before with great results. No change in dose. It will kill all algae though.

I have not dosed it with copper. I personally do not like copper - there is no doubt that it works well when done correctly though.

In addition to killing the feeding parasites, Anti-malarials may have an anti-inflammatory effect and this could be beneficial to reduce an aggressive host response against the parasite thereby reducing edema of the gills and allowing better oxygenation. - Just a theory, but may be the reason why your fish have "perked up".

Day 5: Saw the tang twitch a few times yesterday. Also, she acted like she was going to rub but didn't actually follow through (weird). I plan on leaving her in CP for 3-4 weeks as alprazo suggested. If she's still twitching/rubbing after that I plan on administering a 2nd f/w dip to check for Flukes. If that still shows negative I'll treat with antibiotics. Process of elimination, right? (sighs)

Day 6: Tang is still twitching & scratching. Not as frequently as before treatment began but she's still doing it. The scratching seems to be more targeting the head area. Before it was her gills. I turned on the lights for a few mins but I can't see any Flukes in her eyes. F/w dip prior to treatment didn't show any Flukes falling out either. Also, no white spots on her since treatment began. (more sighs)

Does anybody know if CP can be used with other medicines or methods?
- malachite green
-formalin
- cupramine
- UV

?

Day 9: All fish are acting kinda lazy/lethargic. Maybe it's the lack of light for the past 9 days. However, they do get active whenever it's feeding time. Tang has mainly stayed in her PVC cave the past couple of days, I haven't seen her scratch/twitch once during that time.

it's light sensitive , does it dissolve completely after 1 day? Since you have to dose the exact same amount each day?

Maybe you can turn on the light to give them a few hours of light before you re-dose again the next day

It's my understanding this is a one & done medication (unless you perform WCs during treatment). I dosed 40mg per gal on Day 1 and haven't added anymore since.

I'm very interested in your quote regarding killing the "feeding stages". Is this in reference to cryptocaryon?
Are you fairly certain or can you show me some literature that confirms that chloroquin kills the feeding stage.

There is an assumption here. All of the literature is in working with plasmodium. The mechanism of action has been thoroughly researched. In short it is believed to make the heme toxic as it crystallizes in the feeding stage of the parasite. Maybe there is a different mechanism of action with cryptocaryon, but no one that I know of has worked it out, or even looked into it. So I do not think that anyone is going to show you supportive literature, let alone confirmation. On the other side, I have not seen evidence of activity against non-feeding stages of plasmodium. Cryptocaryon and Plasmodium are distant relatives from what I can determine, both being from the same super phylum. Educated guess I would say.

Not sure about coralline. I keep my tanks poorly lit. But I've used it in the DT with good results.

Yes, it is a one and done med.

Day 13 update: The tank is starting to get a little cloudy. I'm not sure if this is something to do with the CP or not. Maybe alprazo can advise. The fish all are acting/eating fine and the ammonia alert badge shows 0 ammonia. I'm resisting the temptation to do a WC as that would mean I'd need to re-dose the appropriate amount of CP. On a more positive note, it's been many days since I've seen the tang twitch/rub. I'm trying not to get too overly optimistic here as I will not be convinced until I've seen her not twitch/rub for several weeks after the lights come back on and she's more active. My goal is to get her healthy before my May 1st move date so she can go straight into my new 135g reef.

I have noticed cloudy water with some brands of chloroquine. I attributed it to the binder. Maybe I was wrong since yours doesn't have it.

I only had live rock and some snails in my DT.

Day 17 update: Tank cloudiness has cleared up. Glad I resisted the urge to do a WC. Tang looks great. No scratching/twitching for over a week now. (On a side note, I love how this fish stays right by hand and even lets me pet her whenever I'm doing something in the tank. I try to resist the urge to pet her as I know it's not good on her skin.) Anyway, I'm just debating now whether to end treatment at the 21 or 28 day mark.
