MANTISMAN
G'day all

A few days ago you may recall (if you read the thread) that I had just purchased my first Peacock Mantis well today it got delivered and is currently acclimatizing to its soon to be temporary new home. It is as they stated at around 100mm long but they didn't say it would look so nice xD it really is a stunner putting my other more dull colored smashers to shame...

However it is yet to interact in anyway as I am sure its still feeling a bit 'edgy' after the almost 24hour transportation, that was the one thing I did NOT like about dealing with this mob, they wouldn't let me pick the animal up from which ever airport it landed in (as I would of preferred to and by doing it cut the transit time in nearly half...) and the packaging it came in was kind of mediocre... when I saw the box initially I was instantly like "Yep its dead"...in comparison to how my other large spearers came (they couldn't of done better on the spearers huge styrofoam box huge bags and bracing within the box/bags, none of that on this poor peacock).

Anyway it arrived safely, unfortunately another mate of mine didn't pull through with the "safety tank" that I was going to get off him so it left me hanging with NO WHERE to put this new peacock....so I just got back from the LFS with a couple of "reptile tanks" there the typical style ones that are designed for a smasher to break out of....let alone a 4inch peacock....

So how to mantis proof it ?

So far my plans are to basically slide 2 of the containers into one another therefore reinforcing one another (they fit together really well likely for storage in stores). I am also considering lining the inside of the container with White Plastic Egg Crate hopefully preventing the peacock from directly striking the paper thin plastic sides....I'll post some pics shortly.

Unfortunately the container I got are somewhat larger then normal species containers and won't fit in the sump....so its going to have to go in the compartment of either Morgoth or Leviathan xD lol....

The mate with the safety tank that I was supposed to get today is the one with the G.falcatus too so I haven't heard back from him yet so I don't really know about the G.falcatus or whether he still wants to get rid of it.

Here are some pics of how it all went from bag opening to Temp Home made to inside display tank =D

The Peacock as I got it.

It's Temp enclosure that sits inside my larger Temp System.

Peacock inside its temp enclosure before I place it in the temp system =)

Peacock in its temp enclosure with its temp enclosure in the Temp System lol...

The container is almost capable of floating on its own but to help it along I thread a pole through its handles whilst the pole rests on top of the temp display tank, just to stop it from bouncing around in the flow etc.

Hope this lil' guy/gal makes it xD so far so good no signs of illness, looks healthy too =D hope my home made mantis fortress holds up against it for long enough xD in a few weeks all will be in there own enclosures though =).

More to come!

Stunning! Hopefully the friend will come through with the safety tank - will watch this thread to see how the temporary critter keeper holds up!

Well depending on how long my mate takes to get back to me will depend on whether or not I even get the "safety Tank" and the mantis he wants to give me too.

Thanks for stopping in to comment:rollface:

OMG good hunting! Hey Doc you won’t have to leave Berkley to go study mantis all over the world anymore. Just go to Kharn’s house. Hes got them all…….. ok well not all of them. Yet. Give him a couple more weeks.

Kharn you know these things aren’t Pokemon, right?

I like the use of the egg crate you don’t see that much in use at your place. Why is everyone worried about the temporary box? That mantis will never break out of it. I’d bet my bubble king. And again OMG that mantis is good looking.

I vote Kharn for President of all mantis,

Thank you all for the nice comments

I do hope the container does its job for the mean time

Well its settling in fine so far, nothing stressed looking and every time I walk over to check on it, it reacts a bit, I'm sure it will get to know me soon enough, its sharing the same compartment side of the temp display tank as Leviathan and so far Leviathan has shown no interest in the peacocks enclosure.

On the contrary something that is starting to worry me but I am positive its more of a large spearer trait....I hope, Morgoth and Leviathan are 50% of the time, laying on there backs in there tunnels (never in the open) I ASSUME this is there way of relaxing perhaps rather then signs of stress since as I said I have never seen them do it in the open water only in the safety of there burrows do they roll over and stare at me upside down....lazy bugga's

But confirmation would be good as I'd hate to not know that they are under stress and it's a sign of it....

P.S. I am thinking about calling the peacock 'Juggernaught' or 'Juggy' for short =D

Cheers again for all the comments, obviously now that the Peacock is in its compartment with eggcrate, pics of it will be virtually nil until I get it into its enclosure in the main system.

Nice looking Peacock...

It tends to favor a more reddish/orange hue in the pics. Is it really like that or was it your camera settings etc.?

Congrats on a great looker!

Hey jon hows yours doing?

She is doing great... She is geting ready to molt again. She built up a wall around her hole last time before she molted, then tore it down aftwards.

So... She has started that same type wall again... I'm thinking molt time!

I had a fellow reefer in Shreveport offer me a Rare Scoly (Light Blue with red and green lighting bolts) for her... I said no, but I might do it, I dont know
because she is my bud and I would miss her. :(

at only 4inchs long it has to be one of the smallest peacocks I have seen since most that I have seen have been on the larger side....

Cute lil guy. :)
So envious, I'm just prepping for a possible No 2 mantis should an unwanted one crop up in the area lol.
