My light just died/ help!

I have a 90 gallon reef tank that has a ice cap ballast and 3 vho lamps on it. I have been thinking of replacing it for a while with a new light set up. well I just went down stairs to get something and the lights were out. I thought maybe the timer was just out of time since we have had so many power outages and with the time change I thought I would reset it and be all good. Well that wasn't the problem. when I flip the switch on the timer a couple of the bulbs flicker but don't light and there is a little bit of a smell like there is more to this problem like maybe the ballast!

any ways I figure this is a good time to buy a new light. I am looking for a t-5 fixture either a 4 footer with 4 bulbs, which could be no more than 49" long by 9 1/2 wide because of the space where it has to go , or a 36" bulb fixture which could be as wide as 15-16 " if it has to preferably with 6 to 8 lamps and night lights .

Does anyone have anything for sale or can you recomend something I could use.

or does anyone have an extra I could use temp, till I buy one. I Just dont want to loose any corals!
I would even consider a MH light but This is a unit that is built into the wall and I don't know how I would control the light, plus I think the electric would be much more wouldn't it?

any ideas?

Chris

I love my new Nova Extreme Pro t5s, you should check them out. All I have to lend right now would be a 30" 4x65w PC fixture. Sorry about the light crisis.

man if you had an area with more space i could have sold you my 8bulb TEK light. but i think its wider then 9" because of the SLRs i do have a MH single bulb you can borrow if needed to keep your corals alive.

aznutty, I am looking into making more space by mooving a couple of boards in the hood, how wide is the 8 lamp fixture, and how long is it so I can moove some stuff and make it work?

it fits ontop of my 75g, which is the same size as your 90 just a few inches shorter. it's wide tho, covers the top of the tank. i can look it up for ya

I'll check but I don't think I can move that much lumber! Where is the metal halide is it somewhere where I could pick it up tonight or tomorrow, just to get me through till Ican get something permanent.

chris if i could help you out i def would i have a bunch of normal flor if your interested. They would shed some light on the problem.

Gallan56 you have a PM,

Chuggy, thanks for the offer man, I have some reg flourescents as well and there is a window close to the tank so it won't be totally dark, I am going to try to order a new light tonight so I can get it on the way. I was wanting to upgrade to t-5's anyway, it was on my to do list.

Aznutty you have a pm as well

Thanks, chris

I just ordered a 36" 6 bulb T5 fixture with night lights, 3 chords so I can set them up for different times. this will fit in my hood the best and have the most room around it for good ventilation, and will cover the whole tank, because, I have a overflow on one end that takes up about 10" so a 36" light will really be fine. I could have gootten a 48" light for $25 more but It would be a tight fit and I think a waste of light and energy since part of it would be blocked by the overflow.

i just stuck a regular 4 foot two bulb flourescent fixture in there until my new light comes and although the water looks kind of yellow all the corals look ok so far. I was suprized they weren't all shriveled up but they actually have good extension and seem ok so far!
