My little Gigantea garden

This tank started from humble beginnings.

Last year around June I found a frag tank bargain on craigslist for $50.
It's a 24x12x12 All in one.
My primary use was for keeping live rock for whenever I needed to add to my DT.

Eventually, I figured I could use it to keep a gig....but as some of us know all too well, one is never enough :crazy1:

Several months later (and one disaster in between) I feel I reached my goal of keeping 4 beautiful specimens and 2 pairs of skunk clowns:

1 neon green lime (approx 10")
1 baby purple (pre disaster was almost 5", now, approx 3" and recovering)
1 spectacular purple-blue-green multicolor (about 10")
1 ginourmous purple (about 18"-20")

2 A.Perideraion
2 A.Sandaracinos
2 Lysmata amboinensis (cleaner shrimps)
2 Lysmata wurdemanni (peppermint shrimps)
2 Neopetrolisthes ohshimai (anemone crabs)

This past weekend I decided it was time to take some quick pics.

The clowns don't bother each other, after all they have 1 gig each :) In practice, the Sandaracinos hover between the green and the XXL purple, while the Perideraions like the small purple and the Multicolor.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to reproduce the amazing hues of the multicolor, it is purple on the edges then transitions from purple to blue and green closer to the mouth.

The XXL purple, literally sprawls in the background and takes a bit more than 2/3 of the full tank width.

The lime green and the multicolor are my favorite.

The sandaracinos pair. One of them is a tiny juvenile I found at petco.

The baby gig used to be 2", then grew to about 5", however during the Xmas holidays I was gone for a few weeks and I had a major disaster happen during my absence (a bleached large purple died while I was gone, due to a pH imbalance caused by a power outage). Upon my return, the baby gig was on the brink of death. Managed to rescue it (cipro) and it is slowly recovering color and size.

I know it may just be your lighting or the photos, but man that "lime green" one has a strong yellow tint to it. I love it.

Great tank.

How bout some more details of the setup ? lighting filtration etc? pics of what's in those back compartments now ?

Very nice. Love your anemones.
I love those Anemone crabs also. I got two pairs in my tank. They seem to carry eggs all the time.

Thanks everyone!
It took me a while to post this thread, but I have been very busy in the past few months.

A HUGE thanks goes to CoralsAddiction who is the best gig spotter
I got 3 out of 4 gigs thanks to him :)

Great tank.

The lime green color in the photos is very very close to the actual color of the gig. Once the lights go to full actinic, it literally glows.

I am currently out of town until Saturday, so I can't post new photos of equipment.
The setup is as basic as it gets. Filtration is mostly taken care by live rock. AS you can see in the pictures, the amount of rocks is considerable. The tank is just a 30 gallon, but I think a good 40-50% of the volume is taken by the rocks. Clowns don't need to swim around the tank, and being a species setup, I didn't have to worry about the lack of open space.

As a matter of fact, both orange and pink skunk clowns virtually live inside the anemone. The only time I see them venture away is when the auto feeder drops pellets in the water column. They dart out for a split second to capture the pellets, it's really amusing the way they behave.

The back left chamber space is very limited, so I am constrained to what I can keep. I have a lowly chinese skimmer, which is the only one that would fit in a 5x5" footprint. Just recently I added a Tunze 9004 suface skimmer, to remove as much gunk as possible. The gigs like to have clean water, so I tend to skim on the wet side and remove as many organics as possible given the limited size of the tank.

Other than skimming, I add 2 media bags with carbon every 4 weeks. And do small water changes (maybe 5 gallons or less) about every week.

I dose manually the following additves once a week:
Salifert - All in One
Salifert - Iodine
Kent - Tech M Magnesium
Kent - Strontium

I use a bit of Seachem reef buffer whenever I notice pH drops below 8.1. However normally pH is between 8.2 and 8.3.

I rarely test parameters, I only keep an eye on temperature, pH and salinity.
I keep temperature between 82 and 83.5. Salinity tends to fluctuate between 1.025 and 1.026.

The nice thing about gigs (relatively speaking) is that whenever a parameter is out of whack you will notice right away. I spend on average several hours a day staring at them and observing :lol2: so I have a pretty good sense of what could be bothering them.

There is really no magic sauce, but only 2 things that I think contribute significantly to the degree of 'happiness' with gigs (at least in my tank).....Flow and Light.

I'll talk more about that later in detail in an other post.
