My Long Spiny Sea Urchin got a Haircut??

We have had our spiny urchin for 4 year (actually won him at a raffle). Suddenly I noticed that he got a haircut!? All his spines were evenly shaped into the perfectly formed small ball. Although, I don't see any spine parts in the gravel?

Ten days ago we added a clown trigger. Is there any chance the spines are a delicacy and his days are numbered?

The same thing happened to my urchin when I added a trigger. When I removed the trigger the urchin grow back his spines within a month.

I suspect the spines are only an appetizer.
