My Moorish Idol

I bought this moorish idol 1 week ago yesterday....

I put him into my 33G QT... I just started his first treatment of prazi.

He was eating brine shrimp at the LFS with one other idol sharing the tank with him... He had been at the LFS for 2 weeks.

He had no streamer when I bought him... Now it's about an inch long.

He eats everything... NLS pellets, Rogers reef food, mysis & brine shrimp ( soaked in Zoe & Zoecon), fresh clams and his favourite, hikari seaweed extreme.

He's going into a 187G when he's done his QT...

The moorish idol primer has been a big help.

Just an update.

Got home after work last night... The Idol looked skinny, dazed and breathing rapidly...

In the 33G QT i have a koralia pointed at the surface for agitation and a cannister filter with a couple sponges in it... Seachem ammonia alert badge is also in the tank and it did not register any ammonia...

I purchased him Feb 21.. Gave him a week of observation.. Started Prazi a week later. He was still eating everything up until yesterday...

The only thing I changed over the course of his stay in my QT was I added a sunburst anthia.. The anthia is fine... eating and active...

Heard Idols need lots of O2 in the water and maybe that was getting depleted... he wasnt hanging out near the surface or anything... just looked like he had no balance and was being pushed around by the current.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... I will not try another for some time... Might just be too expert for me.

Guys, I have seen many idols eating, isn't the problem trying to keep them long term and treating them in any way for disease?

My tank is 14' long, I have kept many difficult to care for fish, achillies, copperbands, I would love an idol but really don't want to kill any more of these beauties.

Sorry to hear about your Idol. I don't know anything about your QT procedures so I obviously wouldn't even hazard a guess as to what happened to your fish in QT. I have my Hawaiian Moorish Idol for 4 years. My previous MI I had for the same amount of time; I sold it when I tore down my old 300 gallon. I had both of them shipped diver direct and the fish were not exposed to the wholesaler tanks. The key is to get a healthy specimen to begin with. Either go Diver's Den or diver direct if you try another. Both of my specimens went through an extensive QT period where I medicated with Prazi and Chloroquine Phosphate, and the fish has been bullet proof since. I would avoid copper treatments with a MI, or use a less harsh form of copper like Cupramine. I feed primarily Larry's Fish Frenzy, so just about every fish in the tank is thick.

When they are healthy, the Moorish Idol is one of the most rewarding fish to keep. Besides its beauty, mine is almost puppy like and will feed from my hand and follow me as soon as I enter the room.

EDIT: I just noticed you are from Canada, so diver direct is probably not an option.

i agree with jnc914, i recommend to get a healthy MI, as the most i have seen in the past i LFS etc. were almost death.. thats so sad, because MIs are very hardy imo.. When they are established and healthy they eat like pigs! I have mine for 3 years, and he is so pretty and follows me when i enter the room.. Its hard to get a healthy one I know that.. here in switzerland almost like 0 chance.. i was lucky to get this healthy specimen... sorry to hear that with yours
