My new 180g

These 24s are starting to quiet down a little. One thing I'm surprised about is how warm they run. Right now they're the only thing running (no lights) and they're still warming the tank enough for the chiller to run.

Hey, could I get you or Ed to stop by and give me some feedback on this tank. I'd like to try to add a closed loop to the system. Also, if I could get some suggestions on drilling this thing. The big things that worries me about drilling are, is it tempered glass on the bottom and/or can it be drilled at 3/4" thick. My plan is to take the time and set it up with proper flow, etc. Ed has seen the tank I think. I was thinking of taking the holes drilled in the bottom as a closed loop. I'd like to add internal overflows also if possible. Do you think either of you boys could give me some suggestions please?

Ed may be able to stop by, but my plate's pretty full for the next couple of days. Maybe Monday after work?

Mike, is the tank still a bit cloudy. I tested the Ca last night and it measured >500. The Salifert kit indicator did not even turn blue. The TM Pro seems very high in Ca. I think the cloudiness may be due to precipatated Ca, not the sugar sand blazing around the tank.

What is your Ca running? What is your SG? Mine is 1.026. I will do a small water change tonight before turning in. I think the Ca may be higher at higher SG too, I don't recall the chemical relationship at this time. Nor the level Ca precipitates. Does anyone remeber these values?

Scott, I mixed mine to 1.025. After 24 hours mixing (before the calcium reactor) the calcium was 380 and the alk was 8.3.

My water looks cloudy in the pictures but it's micro bubbles; something I'm going to take care of today.

We got the rocks and corals and the tangs transferred last night. My goal today is to get all the frags mounted so I can use my fuge as a fuge instead of a frag tank. :)

I have too many corals!

There's no way all the frags are going in there. Who would have though that someone could have gone from a 55 gallon to a 180 gallon and run out of room the first day! Of course, all the corals attached to rocks I got from Ed filled a lot of space. :)

Hey... I hate to jump in here... but where do you guys get your glass tanks drilled at? I have a 30 gallon cube that I need drilled for a closed loop system?? Any recommendations or thoughts from anyone?

OH my tank looks sooo nice!!! Oh Sorry my rock. I have to say it really really turned out nice. Andy, your tank is in the garage soaking in vinegar. Mike when are my visiting hours?

Ed

Thanks Everyone!

Bob, sorry, but the powder blue is looking pretty comfy in there!

janetglon, this tank came drilled for the closed loop and drains, but I drilled 2 holes in the 30 gallon fuge myself using a diamond tipped holesaw.

Ed, anytime between 4pm and 4:15pm. Just be sure to book a few days in advance.

Ed have you caught yourself sitting on the couch looking at the open space against the wall yet?

HAHAHA how did you know, sometimes I think I can still hear it. This sucks so bad however, I did just pack my mask, fins and snorkle for my TDY trip to Hawaii that I leave for tomorrow.
I don't plan on diving on this trip as I think I will save that for when I LIVE THERE!!

I can imagine the room looks different now. Enjoy yourself in Hawaii, I am planning to make a trip over in the next couple of months to see one of my dealers and maybe hit the beach for a couple days. Just think though, a couple years from now you will be wanting to come back to Iowa because your sick of the beach.

I dont mean to jump in here, but, Mike, did you say your Mag24's are heating up a lot? I am curious because I plan on buying a Mag36 on Monday for my 125 that does not have a chiller and was told that it wouldnt heat up enough to warm the tank to critical levels. If the Mag36 does heat up that much, I wonder if I should stick with 2 Mag 18 or 2 Mag 12. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thank you :)

AzReefCraze, I don't have any experience with a Mag 36. In fact, up until now, a Mag 9.5 was my biggest. But yes, my 2 Mag 24s heat the tank to the point where the chiller runs, even when the room temp is as low as 76. (the chiller kicks on at 81) I was originally going to mount one 24 externally, but the website says that isn't reccommended.

yup those mags are hot ;)

Tank looks good.

Azreefcraze- If it just for returns use a mag 12 split and just add a closed loop or powerheads for display flow. even 2 mag 12's will heat you up a bit .

Thanks. My goal today is to find the loose connection on the VHOs. So far it's only been halides. The VHOs worked when the canopy was on the floor but not now. This happened when I first put them on the 55 too. What a pain.

Thanks guys. I dont want to hijack this thread so I am going to start a new one to try to get more feedback and ask more specific questions. Thank you for your input!
