All of this commotion has made me wonder how long a tang can actually live in a small tank. After I transfer my more "prized" tangs into my 125 I might just go and get a yellow tang and stick it in my 24g nano. I want to see if it will shrivel up and die or thrive and get bigger until eventually I will need to move it to a bigger tank. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't usually post here on RC, but I have to be completely honest, your comments make me want to puke.

To hear you talk about throwing a tang in a 24g tank, which also has significant amounts of rock and sand, displacing further water, as some sort of "experiment" is simply cruel. What if I said, "You know, people keep telling me that there is no way that a siamese cat could win a fight against pit bull terrier, but screw it, I think it will be interesting to see what happens". You aren't Jacques Couteau, and you aren't doing an experiment. You are ignoring the experience and knowledge of those around you to show everyone that you are "right". You are WRONG and your arguments are simply ridiculous. I could keep a child in a closet, but that doesn't mean it will be healthy or happy.

I am by no means a radical enviromentalist, but your apathetic attitude borders on sadism and has no place in reef keeping. You may dismiss the "so called experts" and "some guy who wrote a book" (most of whom have more knowledge in marine animals than you will ever hope to have), but it is simply stupid to discount the years and years of experience that the patrons of this board have accumulated.

So if you want to know what I think your tank looks like, I will tell you. It looks like Auschwitz in glass. Overstocked, Underlit, and filled with incompatible tankmates. My only hope is that you lose interest in this hobby quickly and move onto something else that doesn't involve living creatures.

All of you guy's comments just make my resolve even stronger. Have you guys ever visited your local PETCO. Aren't you guys saddened by the state of the marine fish they keep? Half starved and even dead floating yellow tangs all in the same tank. Go attack them. I may have my tangs in a small tank but at least I take good care of them. I know exactly what I am doing guys. You won't be seeing any fish casualties due to neglect from me.

Kennyboy,

I'm sure this is a learning experience for you. I know you plan to make good use of your 125, so good luck & GOD speed. I'm a huge tang lover, but I made mistakes too prior to learning more. In any case, I think you have done a nice job w/ your nano, as I know you will be moving your tangs soon. I am interested in learning how you placed your clams. I have read that many clams can thrive under pc, vho lighting, as once again, it depends upon the light-depth ratio, not just intensity. Some clams have been fried under too much lighting too. I would like to add a clam to my new nano, but I want to make sure I am prepared. Your clams are thriving under the same conditions I am considering, so I would appreciate if you could share with me what you are doing in relation to them. My 175 bowfront housed only VHO lighting, and grew many differnt species, although, I had not tried clams yet. Thanks in advance.

Also,

KennyBoy what are you using to maintain adequate calcium levels? Are you uisng a calcium reactor? What specific supplements are you using, how much, and how often?

I just lay them down right in the subtrate. Making sure to bury byssal opening in the sand. They do the rest. Also regular feedings of DT's live phytoplankton. I am thinking about culturing the stuff my self because buying the bottled stuff is so expensive.

No calcium supplementation at all. I just do my regular water changes with oceanic sea salt. I do not have a calcium test myself however every month I take my water to have it tested for calcium at my lfs. They tell me my calcium levels are actually to high.

How do we ever learn anything new about this hobby if we don't do experiments? I guess people with PhD are only allowed to kill fish in the pursuit of knowledge...

Are you guys familiar with quarantine tanks at all? How big do you think those are? Not very big. A responsible reef aquarist will always use a quarantine for a few weeks if not months before sticking any fish in the main display? Why aren't you guys up in arms against quarantine tanks. They are small cramped and not very natural looking at all. Please be aware this is only temporary! My fish will have a bigger home! You guys need to cool down. To let you guys know I will be putting these tangs in an even smaller tank. A 10 gallon quarantine tank with hyposalinity for up to one month long. I am just trying to prove to you guys you can keep a moderate sized fish alive and well in a small tank. And I will not be purchasing a yellow tang for any dastardly experiment if you can call putting a tang in a 24 gallon tank dastardly.

Hey guys I was cruising the pics here on this forum. I think I saw a 30 gallong tank with yellow tang! GOD ALMIGHTY that is a blasphemy! GO GET EM TANG POLICE!

So i understand your idea of doing an experiment but an experiment normaly is to test a NEW idea that hasn't been done before. I am sure if you do a search on the site for TANG DIE TANK you will find cases of tangs dying in small tanks.

None of you seem to understand this is only temporary. I do understand my tangs need a bigger tank. Hopefully when mine is ready to go you guys will stop attacking me.

why would you quarantine if your fish are already in perfect condition? that makes no sense to me, it seems ignorant, just like many of your other posts

I don't want to be introducing any parasites into my 125. What is so ignorant about that? If ich occurs I don't want to have strip the entire tank down in order to get any fish out. Prevention is better then trying to solve the problem after it has already occured.

if ich occurs when? if your fish aren't stressed at all bc they are "perfect", they wont be affected by the ich parasites....i know it's really hard, but if you concentrate, you might be able to figure out the answer to your own question:

WTH is a 65g reef freshwater???

You need to read up more buddy! Ich is not caused by stress. Go ahead and believe that. Ich is either present in your aquarium or its not. The only way to ensure that your tank doesn't have it is to quarantine everything you put in your display tank. I am sure the "experts would agree". "ich is caused by stress" hahahahah. A fish can be stressed out all it wants but if your tank doesn't have ich it won't get ich.
