Marc....do you remember how you stopped the bubbles coming from the filtration loop in the tank? Were they a result of that plugged strainer that you can't get to?

Were they from the same place as the Cardinals?

Yup. CBB was gone when I got home today.

Can I make a suggestion regarding the manifold? I would really urge you to ditch the ball valves and get good quality gate valves instead. Manifolds are great but being able to finely tune each reactor is really important, and gate valves tend to be problematic, especially if you leave it set in one position for a long time.

Well, Willy to the rescue, Thank Goodness!

During Marc's visit to town last year, he along with the help of Willy (AKA Willy) were able to fix the issue I was having with bubbles being blown back into the tank. The problem was the drain in the overflow was plugged in the strainer. The pipe was fitted with a coupler and holes were drilled in the pipe incase the strainer became clogged once again. Well with the bubbles today, I got in touch with Willy and he came over and helped removed the pipe and clean the strainer.

First problem was that the pliers were large enough to undo the union. Off to Ace get get a larger one...

Working space was tight..

Overhead ductwork made it tuff to get the pipe up.

Finally got it up high enough to get at the coupler and remove the bottom portion.

One good twist and it finally came loose.

What a mess.

Got the strainer and pipe cleaned and decided to try and syphon out as much of the overflow box as we could.

With everything put back together, it was time to turn on the pump and check for leaks. A quick tightening of the union cured the probelms and all was well....................

Does that mean it has already been resolved? Yes, the strainers were clogged up. Cleaning those out every couple of months is important.

NOPE! The return we took apart and cleaned was for the closed loop which feed the penductors. They weren't the returns blowing the bubbles.......

HEHE:D

Always good to see chuck's tank, ah tanks... the last time i was there was when you were there Marc.. it has progressed quite well(colored up and alot of the softies are really growing!! Filling in a little with corals and FISH!! Such a variety.

This tank is something you really can't grasp in the cam's. It is something to see in person.

Now for the REST of the story!! lol:D :D

Does anyone else have any suggestions BEFORE I glue this all together???

Nice job Willy. Looks like what we did last time made this time easier.

There is a grease you can apply to union threads so that it comes off when necessary. I put it on all of the unions I use, so it won't be so difficult nor need a wrench when it is time to unscrew those.

I bet it was nice to do that job without all those ballasts underfoot in the splash zone. :eek2:

I know Jonathan made some suggestions one page back. I don't see a problem with it currently, although you do want to make sure you can twist each one without it rubbing against the next one.

I'm planning to make the exact same thing for my tank in the near future. Where did you order the gate valves from?

Part Two, The bubbles were coming from the filtration loop, rather than the closed loop. This meant the intake for this look was located in the other overflow box on the right side of the tank. This one had never been removed and cleaned which meant we had to repeat the same process Marc and Will preformed last fall. The first problem was that all of the unions were located right beneath the tank, which meant we couldn't just disconnect and lift the pipe out of the return.

Willy came up witha plan to cut out the union and pull the pipe out of the tank. A new union would be placed well below the tank so that in the future, the union could be disconected and the pipe lift out of the tank to remove the strainer.

Not quite as bad as expected, it still must have been enough to cause the pump to blow bubbles through the loop.

We shortened the pipe with the strainer and drilled a number of holes in the pipe six inches above, (similar to the other return). placed a coupler on the pipe and put it back in the overflow.

After gluing a new union lower on the pipe, everything was put back together and turned on the pump with no drips or leaks. After bleeding the air from the mechanical filters, the returns were now free from bubbles.

My thanks go out to Willy for taking the time to come over and help me get this problem resolved. I owe you one Willy!

I picked up the gate valves at Menards for $2.79 each. I plan to have them facing forward when glued. They are laying on their side for the picture.

While feeding the tank the other night, I noticed my yellow serpent starfish had some how gotten itself inside the overflow and was reaching out of some of the slit near the bottom of the overflow box. With Willy present last night, we tried to locate it, Willy on top, and I was one the side looking at the teeth on the bottom of the box. Even with the tight fit, we weren't able to find the star. It's either in the return pipes, or had gotten back through the teeth and is now in the tank some where.
