My new 9010

It's here It's here!!!! finally :p

So exicted I didn't take my coat off when I got home from work, I just tore the box open and started reading the instructions (YES, I actually read them)

The mounting instructions were ummm.. we'll say interesting:rollface:

It's up and it's skimming! I see it's gonna take a little fine tuning to get the bubbles at the right setting. So far I either get a cup full of light beige water, or the foam wont go up high enough. I have noticed that there is some dark crud building up on the rim on the inside. I'm assuming thats a good thing?

I guess my my main question is how high should the foam be? I assume it should barely be able to spill over into the cup.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I usually start with the screw open three turns, I open or close it 1/4 turn per day to get the desired skimming, dark tea color/ light coffee is what I strive for. Trying to adjust it any other way is too difficult, I had that changed on the last revision of the instructions which are not yet in print.

Hey Roger, I was about to update you on my 9010 and this looked like a good thread to do it in as it might help wett hands out as well.
The thing is pulling out some nice ugly brown stuff!
I started with the 3 turn rule but I have a question;
What is the desired setting?
Do you want it where you can actually see the bubbles coming over the side or have the bubble level half up, or somewhere in between?
Iunderstand thats the same question wett hands asked but you replied to adjust until you get the desired skimming.
Either way I set it, I get the dark stuff so I guess I just need to know at what rate should it be coming out.
Also I have the foam extractor which I haven't used yet.
When I do use it,how should I set the skimmer?
Thanks

LOL yea, putting that thing together was the 1st and hopefully only time that I almost had an "Anti-Tunze moment"
The instructions actually do more harm than good.
After I read them, Immediately did an RC search for Tunze Pics and just went by the pictures.

It is almost impossible to say, skimmate varies with the aquarium chemistry, inhabitants and feeding, I generally strive for a more wattery skimmate. Three turns is the starting point I find gets most people to some skimming and they can adjust from there. The foam extractor generally requires 5 turns open.

Well it's been almost a week now and It seems to be skimming since the buildup of foam is almost the color of coffee (no sugar, 1 cream please :p) But it is not spilling into the cup. It is about 2/3- 3/4 of the way up for 2 days now and just sits there 'percolating'

Is this normal? Do I just need more patience?

How long has it been since you made an adjustment?
If it's been a few days, I would give it a turn.
I kept adjusting mine until I got the foam right at the top and it just slowly seeps over. I can barely notice it coming over. It's filling the cup about a 1/4" a day, thats how slow it's going.
Of course I have no idea what I'm doing, but the stuff in the cup looks nasty!
