My New AGE tank build! It's big! ~1500g DT

So I've been working on holiday decorations and haven't had much time to work on the tank. I will try to get some pictures today. I tore down the 300g and moved the fish to the new tank. I have a whitetail bristletooth and a vlamingi in QT. I rushed a bit on that, so I'm doing a 25% WC daily to get the QT to keep its ammonia down. After that tank cycles, I will start the meds in the QT. My QT protocol is usually about 6 weeks, so stocking will be slow because I only have one QT tank (40g) and it will likely take 6 months or so.

I currently have:
PBT
Achilles
Chevron
Desardjini
One spot foxface
9 chromis
bluespot jawfish
2 clowns

in QT
Vlamingi
white tail bristletooth

I'm thinking about adding
5-7 yellows
5-7 convicts
naso (maybe)
Purples (maybe)
more chromis
anthias (maybe)
chocolate (maybe)

bunch of SPS

any suggestions on species, order of introduction, or quantities? Keep in mind I don't want a crowded tank. My thought on doing this upgrade was to make sure the fish I have now have a large enough tank to do well.

thanks!

The foam wall adds so much realism to the tank. Once again, I love your aquascape. Did you happen to take pics of the foam wall process? Possibly a how to for dummies?.....

Thank you!

I didn't take pics, but it's actually pretty simple. You silicone eggcrate to the glass and then spray foam it with pond foam from amazon. It's pretty much the same thing as using "great stuff" from Home depot. The only trick is to make sure you get UV resistant foam made for outdoors like the pond stuff. The eggcrate is to make sure it doesn't float away. The foam doesn't attach to the glass very well, but attaches to the eggcrate well. While the foam is curing, you can play with it to make the texture you want. You definitely want to wear disposable gloves as it's a pain to get off your skin.

It is easier to foam the back of a tank while it's lying on its side so it doesn't sag, and if you're doing it that way, you can even sprinkle sand on it or insert small rocks into it to make it even more realistic. Eventually it will cover with coralline, so the texture is really the only important part aesthetically.

To me, one of the great plusses of doing it this way is that you don't need to clean two sides of the glass! I want coralline to grow there and so never have to scrape the back and right side!

That tank is freaking HUGE!!!! Wow, those are some lucky fish.
Can't wait to see this tank 5 years from now with massive coral colonies growing

+1!!

This tank is going to be something when it really gets growing! I love the minimalist aquacape. It really makes the tank look even bigger. Hats off! Looking forward to seeing more!

Awesome build!
Regarding your stocking, I would be careful with adding the convicts. They are the "wimpiest" of tangs and often get picked on by any other tangs. Even though a school would look great in there I'd be worried about your achilles destroying them

thank you Krakerplus, Kolakao155, hatfielj, and slief for the kind words! I am excited to see it growing. I haven't been doing much with the tank while decorating for christmas, but hope to get back to it a little this week.

That does concern me, particularly since they are acanthurus, I really like convicts though and would hope that with enough of them, they could spread out the attacks? Also I'm hoping the achilles and the pbt would keep up their usual attacks on each other instead of going after the new fish?

thoughts on that?

Fish only shoal when it is in their short-term interests to do so. A raid on the territory of a more stationary tang like the powder blue is a perfect example. I have seen film of convicts doing exactly that. If you have a really big tank you could possibly see similar behaviour, but I am talking 1000 gallons, here. Don't forget that the powder blue and the convicts are all going to reach about seven inches in length and are going to demand some significant swimming room.

well, it's between 1400g and 1500g, so what do you think? I think it's enough swimming room, 11.5x4.5x4 roughly?

I have found that my Convict Tangs are able to hold their own against all of my other Tangs including my Sohals, Achilles and PB's. The most aggressive Tang in my system seems to be a Kole Tang. It sometimes harasses a Vlamingii that is 3 times its size.

Yes, understood. I put that there for others who might also be reading so they wouldn't misunderstand where I was going with that.

I guess it depends on the individual fish then(or lack of being an individual). I put a very healthy 6" convict in my tank that is about 1500 gal and unfortunately by the time I could get him out it was too late. He got picked on by everybody from PB to yellow and purple that were much smaller. Good luck if you do and please keep us posted because I would love to try a small group of them but have been afraid.

That's funny! I have two koles a yellow and a blue eyed and they are both sissies. They hardly ever stray from the rockwork

Good point on that. I have learned to not add any fish one at a time anymore. I have had much better success "stockpiling" fish in qt and frag tanks then dumping 4-5 in to the display at once.

that's a good thought, thanks! I have a 120 plumbed in as sort of a refugium. After QT, I could put quite a few fish in there until they are ready to be added as a group.

As an update, I haven't really had time to do anything with the holidays. I just finally plugged in all my pumps and still haven't gotten the controller hooked up. It appears to be defective since it won't power on. I'll have to call neptune tomorrow and see if I can get an idea of why.
