My new clown tang!!

Mangodude

The Clown Tang Keeper!
Here's some pics.. Got him today from Lee at Corals and fins.. About 5 inches long and pretty fat..

Extremely happy with purchase!! Got him for a great price considering the size and he told me it was 2 inches shorter than what it really is. Would reccomend Lee to anyone!

Not the clearest pictures sorry. I'll try to take more tomorow when the lights come back on..

Still in the bag..

Here's a shot with the flash.. kinda washes everything out..

Are they reef safe? Will they nip on lps? I know they can be agressive
They are beautiful!

They're entirely reef safe as far as I know.. there may be a few rare cases of nipping but they're reef safe otherwise..

Yes, I've heard they can be aggressive but most of my fish are considered semi-aggressive anyway. I've also heard not to keep two basslets in the same four foot tank and did it anyway with great success.. He pretty much has his own niche in the tank. His only competitor would be my maroon clown which I plan on getting rid of anyway.

I'll keep updating this as to his behaviour..

He is so nice. Wish i could get one but it would probably clash with my sohal. My sous chef got one as well.

Nice looking fish. I just met your father and brother a few hours ago. They stopped by to purchase some java moss from me and he mentioned that his other son just purchased a clown tang from Lee. Then I come on here and just happened to see your post so I had to say something lol.

Pretty fish.. im pretty sure the reef safe is comparable to similar fin shaped tangs.. I personally like the clown over the sohal.. from what I have heard they are the second most agressive next to the sohal. And also fish behavior is a case by case some people get lucky.

Congrats on a great looking fish! I hope he does great for you. Please, give updates on its behavior and how acclimation goes. Shouldn't be quite as aggressive for you, if he's your only tang.

Nice looking fish good luck with him. I have also heard they are hard to keep because of feeding. Is he eating? I also have a sohal about 8-9" he's not aggressive until feeding time. And then he just darts at the yellow tang. Again good luck.

Yes indeed a beautiful fish I hav 1 as well. Lee is also a nice guy!!!

How's your clown tang behave/eat/etc.? Curious to see how other people fare with this fish.

He hasn't eaten yet but I've only fed once since I got him. He just sits in his whole during eating time and comes back out afterwards. Not really sure why... I'll try fresh garlic juice next.. never seen a fish deny fresh garlic dipped nori.. :fish1:

How does your sohal behave? Everybody always talks about them being very very aggressive fish and they shouldn't be owned (not that I believe that..). Seems like there's more of us out there that own Acanthurus Tangs than what I thought..

Yeahhh that would be them. Thanks for posting! Always nice to be able to know who I'm really talking to on here :D

A clown tang in a 4' 125g tank is NOT going to work. The minimum tank size should be at least 250g and at least 6' long, preferably 8'. Coupled with the fact that this is an extremely difficult to keep fish, not to mention extremely aggressive, the long term survivability of your purchase is highly unlikely. There's also a very good chance that he wipes out your other fish. Again, this is a very difficult to keep fish and should be left to experts with very large systems.

IMO, a reputable fish store would never had sold you that fish without knowing the size of your tank. If they did know the size of your tank, well, shame on them. It seems that the lfs that sold you the tang was more interested in your money than trying to educate you and steer you in the right direction.

Anyway, if you still decide to keep the fish, I wish you the best of luck. They are an awesome looking fish. Even if things don't go well, try and learn from the experience.

My buddy put one in a 150 gallon 6 foot tank and it did great for a few months then got very aggressive and just suddenly died.

It's a 6ft tank...

And yes I know the risks etc.. I've been searching and reading about it for 3 months. He is the smallest tang in my tank and has showed no signs of aggression yet. In fact he's the one that's getting pushed around (by my clownfish, NOT the other tangs). I appreciate your concern as it common for some people to buy something they know nothing about. However, I've done my reading and have expereince with larger tangs and feel confident about the purchase.

If you did your research, then you would have known that this was coming and you've brought it upon yourself...
(the responses have been pretty benign thus far.)

I don't see this ending well for this thread or the fish.

But  good luck.

Where, BTW, in your "research" did you see a 125g tank would be appropriate for a clown tang? Just curious.

It takes more maturity to pass on a fish for the fish's sake than to try to keep one for your sake.

Lastly, BEAUTIFUL FISH!!!! I wish I could get one. :(
