My New Golden Angel

Beautiful fish. There was an LFS here that had 2 small ones about 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 inches in separate tanks. I was tempted to try and pair them up. Unfortunately the only reason I was in the shop was because it was next to the insurance agent I was dropping off a check to insure the new house I was closing on that day.

No and I was kicking myself after hanging up for not asking. They did tell me the fish are coming out of bali though.

Their C. venustus are from Fiji, too.

Bali is atleast a possibility, though. Unfortunately it looks like they are the only ones with Goldens in stock. Hopefully this next batch will be a good batch.

Right (said in a sarcastic tone :) ) I don't know, I don't really want a fish that has just recovered from something maybe a week ago being shipped across the country to me. I would rather have it be a fish they are confident in. We'll see. I'm in no rush.

That's a beautiful fish and thanks for sharing! I'm envious b/c I've been trying to get a healthy specimen for a while now. Three tries and they have all ended in the same results, they wouldn't eat for one reason or another and died. I'm encouraged that there are healthy specimens out there now so you've just reignited my passion for finding one. Maybe this time I'll stick to finding them "used" lol.

Gorgeous fish!! What's the scientific name? I'm a sciencey person!!! Gotta know the scientific name :)

I'm so addicted to this thread b/c I can't wait until I can find a healthy Golden Angel for my tank. What size is your QT? The sponge filter looks HUGE! I like the design of those much better than the flimsy yellow sponge ones. The base on those are weighted. I had one once, but can't find it now and I can't remember where I got it.

The tank is a 45 gallon. 2 foot tall, 1 foot deep, 3 feet wide. I wouldn't consider it a true QT, but I don't plan on adding anything for a while. I just like using sponge filters. Cheap and such a good filter. I bought the biggest ones off of DFS. I'm sure they have some of a LFS should carry them. These are especially nice because the plastic inside the sponge connects so the air actually goes to the bottom of the sponge. Some sponge filters the air exits right at the top so it isn't very effective and often causes huge bubbles, but this can be fixed with a little airline tubing and an airstone.

tcmfish - any update, did you ever get the mate? I just got one from Vivid Aquarium last week. Very skittish and shy, tends to stay in the back of the tank or under some of the liverock. So far has just been picking here and there on the rocks and tank's back glass. I have not seen it eat anything I have offered yet. I've tried frozen mysis, Rod's and Cyclopese. I'm hoping that I am just not seeing it eat. It's definitely acclimated, would think if it was going to die it would have in a weeks time? It gets along fine with the other tank inhabitants - pair of picasso percs and a mystery wrasse. The pair of coral banded shrimp go after it sometimes if it strays to close to either of them. Hoping it will eventually come out and eat with the others at feeding time/frenzy.

Not a good update. The angel didn't make it. Some of you probably saw my thread about the lemonpeel and ebili angel I added, well when I got the new fish I decided to treat the whole tank with prazipro and the fish did not make it through that. It was my fault and I'm pretty ****ed about it because the golden angel would have done fine had I not added the other fish. They were seperated by a divider, just when I treated the tank nothing made it.

I am not really sure what killed the fish, but I have a feeling it was something the new fish brought in.

I was not able to find another one after either. I had been looking for a while too and nobody could get any in. There should be more coming in soon, but I doubt I will be able to afford them.

It stinks, but I'll probably just stick to my C. argi for a while until I can setup a permanent system.

With your fish aqualab, if I were you, I would try newly hatched baby brine shrimp, or live blackworms. Also littleneck clams opened up are usually a good choice. One other thing, if you can isolate in a tank where you can monitor it better. I doubt it is eating when you aren't watching. Plus you have a mystery wrasse, and I don't know how yours behaves, but when I had mine it was always first to the food and just devoured everything. Probably a big intimidating for the little guy, especially since they are naturally a shy fish.

Your grocery store or seafood mart should carry littleneck clams, you can buy live blackworms at the LFS or online, and brine shrimp is easy to hatch, just bubble it overnight in some saltwater in large pickle jar or something similar. The next day take the airline out, the unhatched cysts will float and you can take a small flashlight and shine it in from the SIDE and they will come to it, then just take an airline or small tube and syphon them into another container to transfer them to feed.

Good luck, with your fish.

Sorry to hear about your Golden, I just found mine this morning half wedged under a rock - dead. Too timid and just wasn't eating. The second one that I have had die on me over the last several years. Between their cost and the difficulty with acclimating/survivability, I won't try another one.

You want to try and get fish that are collected out of Vanuatu. I wouldn't give up if I were you, just make sure you are prepared for it when you get it.
