I bought the tank from Pets Warehouse about 2 weeks ago not that it matters because it was a manufacturing defect obviously. I called and spoke to Bob and he said I have to call Oceanic who will give him authorization to replace it so I will call them Tuesday. Bob seems like a good guy so Im sure he will take care of me.

Anybody have experience with this sort of thing? I dont really want another one of the same tank, it was a 40 gallon stretch hex. The water also ran into my brand new SLS HQI ballast and ruined my carpet. Do they do anything for equipment? I just want a regular shaped tank as they have less seems that could fail. The crack seems to have started on the bottom glass in between two joints.

Thanks

Generally the warranties only cover the product itself, not damage to other items as a result of the product failure :(

Great :( My wife doesnt want me getting another stretch hex. I wonder if they will let me get something else instead.

I posted on your other thread. I'm sorry that I don't have anything more to offer, but you're not alone in your disapproval of Oceanic.

Oceanic failure

Oceanic failure

Sorry to hear about your tank failure, afriend of mine has a 120 Oceanic fail last year while only a few months old. They were pretty good though. They gave him a credit for the value of the tank which allowed him to upgrade to a larger tank. They also gave him money for the damage to the carpet.
I have a 120 Oceanic up for about a year I feel a little nervious now. Good luck please let up know how it turns out. By the way I'm the one that bought the rock from you when you took the tank down last year.

I will definitely report back once I speak to Oceanic. I dont want another stretch hex. I wonder if they do a deal on a slightly larger tank because I dont think they will cover my other losses. I was eyeing that 45 gallon tech tank they have now with the starphire glass but couldnt afford the price tag. Maybe this will persuade Oceanic to bring it down to more in my price range. :)

I broke down my 120 in March and had to get something small because I missed reef keeping. Just my luck that this happens only two weeks into my return. :(

I also posted in your previous thread.

Make up an itemized list of your losses. Be reasonable and don't try to gouge anyone. Call oceanic and talk to them about it. If they turn you down, send it to their legal department via certified mail. If they still reject your request, then use small claims court. It's more work than filing a claim on your homeowners policy, but will also cost you far less in the long run.

Oceanic has their own insurance. Let them file a claim against their own policy. Plus, if they have some kind of quality control issue, they have no incentive to FIX THE PROBLEM unless they are held accountable.

Oh, and keep a detailed written record of EVERYTHING having to do with this tank. Every call, letter, etc. This is a no brainer winner if there is indeed a manufacturing defect.

Thanks. I will probably have to wait until Tuesday because tomorrow being MLK Jr. day I doubt they are open.

I'm chomping at the bit here to get this replaced.

Also wanted to say thanks to Tony at Reef Exotics for letting me keep my live rock and pair of Clowns in his massive sump connected to his 450 reef. The only other person I know with a SW tank has a 3 foot Eel and a Trigger so that wasnt a good place for my Clowns. :)

Just remember that "customer service" departments for most major companies aren't designed to make you whole, they are there to make you go away.

Just be meticulous, be patient (as much as you can be) and be reasonable. But if I had damages because of something like this, the company would definitely be handling it.

Ok, I just got off the phone with the warranty department. They will either give me a new tank or I can get my money back. They will not cut me a deal on a different model, they said that is up to my LFS. They will not pay for any property damage either but I kind of figured they would say that.

On another note, he said Oceanic does not temper their tanks anymore. Only AGA gets tempered bottoms, Oceanic uses "thicker, better quality glass" that does not need to be tempered. This is from the warranty department though so take that with a grain of salt.

I really dont know what I want to do right now. I dont particularly want another 40 stretch hex but there is such a big jump in price to the next model that I cant swing the difference. I might just get my money back and take my business elsewhere....

Im not expecting them to give me a tank that costs three times the price I paid but it would have been nice if they said they would meet me halfway.

Im not expecting Pets Warehouse to do much either and I cant blame them. Its not their fault, this is a manufacturing defect.

Uh, oh, I just bought a Oceanic 58G from Pets Wharehouse:( . I don't see any cracks and hope I won't later. I don't have water in it yet.

Hmm, I would have thought Oceanic would either pay for your damages or gave the tank you want at a discount. That is probably a BS story that Pets Wharehouse would have to give you the discount(which won't happen). Oceanic is the manufacturer, the company that makes the tank and they can't give you a price break? What a load of crap.

Like I said, they should of EITHER paid for your damage or gave you the new tank at a discount. Looks like now they will lose a customer and even more from this thread. Thats bad management.

i would fight it, I bought a heater from petco and 2 days later at a setting of 80, it malfunctioned and my tank was at 103 degres when I came home from work. I took pictures of the tank and all the dead live stock. They sent me a check for almost $800. Luckly I saved all recipts. They took almost 2 months, but they stood up and did the right thing. I didn't try to scam either. My tank was shot because of a bad heater.
