My new Onyx Clowns and their new home

Just wanted to share my new additions to my reef.

A few weeks ago, I contacted Rod at Rod's Reef with some general questions about his Onyx Clowns. He quickly put me in contact with Alex, his "clown handler." After some friendly email exchanges, she offered to send me a pair of hand-picked Onyx Clowns, based on my color/pattern preferences. Needless to say, this was beyond my expectations as my initial plan was just to go through a local retailer to acquire the clowns.

Alex was a pleasure to work with. While you might pay a bit extra for your clowns since you'll have to pay for shipping, you may have the opportunity to work directly with Rod's Reef, and may have your clowns selected based on your criteria (depending on the age of the clowns).

Alex gave me approval to share her contact information. If you're interested in purchasing Onyx Clowns directly from Rod's Reef, send me a PM.

And now, some photos. This package arrived about a week and a half ago:

And when I opened it I saw this:

And, then I popped off the lid:

And drip acclimated:

Then introduced them into my tank (sorry for the bad photo, lights were off and flash was on):

As you can see, they are older than expected. The third band is almost fully developed. I was very happy to see this.

Less than an hour after introduction, they quickly found a new home in my magnifica:

I received an interesting email from my LFS (Thanks for the heads up Joe!). It had this photo attached:

I quickly needed to find a buyer for my magnifica, since I didn't want both in my tank (and needed funds to purchase the gigantea). Fortunately, I secured a buyer the next day, and was off to pick up a new home for my clowns:

It took the clowns less than an hour to move from the magnifica to the gigantea. Both nems were in my tank for a few hours while I waited for the new buyer to pick up the mag (Nice to meet you, Rich!). Fortunately the gig was in very good shape at the store and showed no signs of shipping stress. My fingers are crossed that everything will be okay. I waited for months to find a healthly mag, but this guy was simply too tempting to pass up.

I moved onto a rock pile (I bought a special rock with a big hole in it and filled it with sand, to trick the nem into thinking it's in the sand bed) directly under the MP40 and a 250 watt halide (and hasn't moved since introduction to the tank) The tentacles are lengthening which I hear is a good sign, and you'll notice the size difference from introduction to current:

Wish me luck!

I thought they liked having their foot in the sand. Not so? Even better. I was worried it would want to move around. But it seems pretty happy where it is.

Haddoni like sand. Giganteas like rocks. You may keep the sand or dump the sand as you wish if the gigantea seem to be "happy". However, keep in mind that they often look "happy" until the light goes out and starts the deflate/inflate cycle.
Good luck with the gigantea.

Also, not to rain on your parade here but Onyx clowns have showed the black color fading in a magnifica. Don't trust me? Do a search.

Good to know. When it was attaching, it looked like it was trying to attach itself to the edge of the rock above the sand pit. Completely makes sense now!

I forgot to address this... this was one of the reasons I decided to switch to a gig. I didn't want to risk losing the black keeping them with a mag. Rod mentioned that he keeps clowns with gigs, so I thought it was a safe bet.

I like an update also. Did that beautiful Gigantea make it? You seem to have a different Gigantea with the same clowns now or is it the same one but just healthier?

The purple gig ended up dying after about a month in my care. It did the typical inflate/deflate of a sick gig. At one point I thought it was going to pull through, but then it quickly went downhill. Though it was my toughest loss in my 20+ years of reefing, I also learned quite a bit since then, and met a lot of nice folks along the way. What I hold onto is the fact that I CANNOT save sick gigs, and I make sure to pass this information on to anyone who tries. My over-confidence definitely got the best of me.

I now know with 100% certainty what a sick gig looks like. I've seen quite a few since mine died. Fortunately, I was able to find another gig from a reefer who was downsizing. He didn't know what kind of anemone he had, but as soon as I saw the photo of it, I knew what it was and drove about an hour from my home and picked it up. When I first acclimated it, it was a grayish brown with a blue column. Fast forward 6 months and I now have a healthy gig that's about 14" around when fully expanded. With the Radion LEDs, it looks like the color has changed to a mauve, almost light purple, but definitely not a true purple like the one I had. I still hope to find a true purple or a blue gig, but I feel fortunate to have a healthy gig, and won't risk adding another one. I think it took the loss of my first gig to realize how hard they are to acclimate, and to truly appreciate the healthy one I have now. It's been chewed up by my MP40 twice. The second time it managed to squeeze through the foam guard. But both times it recovered, which leads me to agree with others who say that once a gig is established, they are hardy animals.

The clowns on the other hand, have been a pleasure ever since I got them. The male has fully colored up, with a black dorsal. The female continues to color up, but I don't know if the dorsal will ever fully fill in.

I'll post photos and possibly a video tomorrow.

Thank you for the update!! Awesome update too!!

It's sad that the purple gig was lost :( I had one a few years back that I thought was totally out of the woods and then an house heater/ idiot me/ weekend away disaster caused my tank to drop into the mid 60's for at least a day or two, if not longer and I lost it. The only thing I lost in a fully stocked 180 was that gig. It was heartbreaking!

My current gig though, I got it from a fellow reefer in the beginning of February, and you are sooooooooooooooooo spot on with truly appreciating the healthy gig, and the risk of adding another one. Anyway, beautiful clowns too!!

I dug up a video I shot back in May:

Sorry for the low quality -- I shot it with my iPhone 3GS and uploaded it straight to YouTube.

I wasn't aware that Rod's sold clowns. Very interesting! Love the Onyx as well. I have a pair from Sustainable Aquarius.
