my new pipes :)

hey gang,

i bought a pair of pipes yesterday.. it was a long hour n half to acclimate them. they are very happy to be in the overflow box. there are soo many pods to feast on. i am going to let them eat pods for a bit more but want to feed them frozen. is there a trick on accomplishing that?

that bad huh? i couldn't find a pair of alligator pipes so i went w/ these guys. they're munching away on pods in the overflow right now. i'm just afraid they will ONLY eat live pods

I had luck with cyclopeeze with these but thats about it. Usually when feeding the pipes in my reef I have to turn all the powerheads off, that may help. Good luck.

thx 4 the tip dan. they've finished a good portion of the pods n the overflow. I haven't let them loose in the display yet.afraid they will finish them all in there. good thing I have a nest to breed the pods in the overflow. they won't be all gone. ill try the cyclopceeze method. do you know if they will take reef nutrtitions artic pods?

I have best luck training to frozen during the QT process by keeping them in a bare bottom tank with no live rock. You can slowly blow the food around the tank until they eat it. The lack of distraction of substrate and rock seems to help IME.

Small mysis, cyclopleese, artic pods, and gu loaded brine all make good foods IME.

thx pledo. i have to go get some of that stuff hopefully they eat it. they've feasted on my overflow pod farm. can't have them in the overflow forever.

With this species make sure you watch for a certian bacterial infection around the last vertabrates before the tail. I've noticed this develop in both this species and the multibanded pipefish. I have no idea how it starts but in the two cases ive witnessed this, the bacteria ate through the flesh and the bone im guessing and the tail eventually fell off! You'll notice just a dark area under the skin at first and then an open wound followed by a lack of appetite. Be careful.

update, i haven't tried frozen with them yet. they're doing great in the tank feasting on all the pods. thanks for the tip danfrith. they're in a 80g right now.. i hardly get to see em except when they head towards the glass to feed on the pods
