My new Purple Hornets

I got hooked up at the LFS, being a regular has finally paid off, and scored these sweat Purple Hornets as unmounted frags for a reasonable amount. They are in my new frag tank and doing great.

One thing I did notice is that my new T-5 set-up is quite blue...I am thinking about adding another 2 bulb retro to the mix and go with two more 10k bulbs. What do you think of the lighting from the pic? Current bulb set-up is 2 blue, 1 10k and 1 12k. To the eye it looks just like my friends tank and he is running a 15k MH by itself. I wonder how growth will be?

Anyways, just wanted to share my new corals. Take it easy,

Hard to tell from the pic, but those may not be... ring looks too thick and i don't/can't see alternating colored skirt.

Skirt is definetly alternating. I think the dominating blue tint maybe throwing off how they look to the eye. That and I only have a cheap Canon camera.

Just for giggles is anyone willing to post pictures of both Purple Hornets and some Blue Steel zoanthids? Preferably not some goggled image, but of actual zoathids that you have? I would like to see them for reference.

In the meantime I will figure out a way to get a better picture of mine. I didn't start this thread to be a "Please ID this" but since some of you turned it into that, let's go with it.

+3 they look like blue steels (aka- blue hornets, african blues)

I was under the impression that african blues and blue hornets were something different. I have purple hornets and blue hornets and niether one look like the picture of african blues or blue steels above. I will try to get a decent picture of my purple and blue hornets when the lights go on.

Yes blue hornets are different.I don't know why people are calling the african blues blue hornets.I have them all.Blue hornets look identical to purple hornets only with a light blue in the center of the polyp instead of purple.Hear is a pic of my blue hornets. This was when i first got it.I don't have a current pic.But you can see the light blue in the center.Hence blue hornet.

I've read from a few places that the reason why they call the so called "hornets" of what ever color zoa, is because they have alternating colors on the skirt, like the alternating black and yellow on a hornets rear end.

The reason they call them purple hornets is because the founder gary at reef pets named them that.!
Fcamdog,I do think that the ones you got are refered to as steel blues.

I've come to find out that there are two different versions of purple hornets. I bought a colony each from different reputable people/store in the forums, but a side by side comparsion confirms this. One colony is a very dull dark purple, the colors on the other colony is bright florescent colors (this is the true purple hornet). I've read that a lot of the purple hornets going around now is actually Lemon Drop zoas, which looks almost the same as the true purple hornets, only a more dull color. I think my other colony is actually lemon drops. What are your thoughts

I think they are different.Purple hornets have a yelloy ring.the lemon drops have a bright neon green ring and if you look real real close the skirts are different also.I have seen both and they are definantley different.

+1 lemon drops have a neon green ring instead of the yellow ring. Not the best example, but these really do have a neon green ring. But they are the best "knock-offs"
