My new Purple Hornets

The reason they call them purple hornets is because the founder gary at reef pets named them that.!
Fcamdog,I do think that the ones you got are refered to as steel blues.

Obviously thats the reason, because someone named them! The reason why they are named "hornets" is because of the alternating colored skirts, like hornets abdomens. Oh and by the way he didn't name them, his wife did. And it says the person that actually introduced this species is not "the founder gary" (do you mean the founder of reef pets? or is he like the ultimate founder Gary,or do you mean he is the founder of these zoas?) but a person named Casey Lacefield.

I think I'll share a pic I made for my own comparison. All the comprising pics are from Coralpedia and so are the names.

nice compilation of photos... i think the closest is the lemon drop. It is the only one that has an alternating skirt of solid color. I'm not going by color since those are more than likely 6 different tanks with 6 different light set-ups.

This thread totally changed from what I intended, but I am happy it has. This should be used as a great example of not being anal retentive about naming corals and just enjoying what we are lucky enough to have.

Very subtle differences is the truth! Lighting being different, truth! Crappy camera with honest photographer, or the photo shop guy... I see the utility of naming some of the more unique zoo's just for identification. What I don't agree with is stupid arguments over names when the difference is so subtle, who really cares?

I've read quite a few snide (sp?) remarks on this forum lately and can see why it has declined a bit. Relax a bit folks and enjoy yourselves. That should be one of the reasons we visit here, right?

Respectfully, if you don't care about the name, why did you label the thread "My new Purple Hornets" and say "...scored these sweat (sweet) Purple Hornets" in the first line?

If you'd said "scored some sweet new zoas" this thread wouldn't have gone down the "name game" route you seem to object to.

What you have doesn't appear to be what most people refer to as Purple Hornets. So long as you know that, then all's good.

Took the words right out of my mouth...

Amen! seems like the forums are turning more into a look what I have rather then a learning tool. Dont get me wrong, It's nice to see other peoples corals but why not tell about how you got them to where they are at. :sad1:

Wow, I've got bashed pretty good this thread. So I'll leave this forum to all of you professionals and dare not post a picture because I'd be bragging. I think that was what Scuba_guy_ron was getting at.

not saying that at all my friend.

Please tell us about your acclimation process. I tried my hand at some rare zoas recently with ill effects. I'd love to learn from your recent purchase.

I'll post a pic then for comparison to the original polyps in question:

Blue Steels in my book but I'm open to criticism as the whole naming game is an amalgamation of subjective thought.

Why people gotta get all emotional?

it's a forum, you post something, people comment on it? isn't that the point?

whether the comments are positive or negative really is irrelevant... actually if anything negative comments just teach you something most of the time...

so you didn't get purple hornets, who cares? obviously you. but that doesn't really matter either...

you say you got "bashed pretty good?" what you talkin bout?

it's just words man... words on a screen... written by people sittin in chairs, some might have been naked when they wrote it.

i think Fcamdog is the one who should "relax and enjoy" the forum, take advantage of the forum, most people on here know what they're talking about... and it shows in their tanks.

you go on some of these other forums and everyone's kissing each other's butt and their tanks all look like garbage.

take advantage and stop complaining.

"written by people sittin in chairs, some might have been naked when they wrote it." lmao... or better yet typing from the computer in thier parents basement....

Im sure I will be flamed for this comment or better yet observation but here goes.
At a recent aquarium show in Orlando a person bought a frag of true purple hornets, confirmed by numerous reefers and collectors of zoas.
After putting several polyps in differant areas of the tank he realized quickly that the blue in the center shows up in higher light, and when lowered turned purple.
I have seen more than one thread where people buy or thought they bought PH's and then someone suggests they are something else. I have to wonder how many of these people have their PHs under high lighting and if they lowered them would quickly have the center darken back up.
