My New Tank Build & Transfer from 55 gallon to 90 Gallon. Sump WATER NOISE PROBLEM

My 55 gallon has a seam that is coming apart at the top corner so I thought it would be a good time to upgrade tanks. I just got the tank setup with a diablo dc 3500 return pump and bought a SRO2000 skimmer from jporter.

One problem i'm currently running into is with the noise made by the water flowing into the sump.

I have read suggestions about a "reverse durso" into the sump, having the line 2'' into the water with a filter sock... but no real solution besides a herbie or bean animal. Unfortunately, I only have one drain hole and one return hole and it seems too dangerous to run a siphon w/gate valve without an emergency or second drain.

What are some things that you guys have done to make the water flowing into your sump quiet?

I need your ideas about how to transfer the coral, sand, rock, etc from my 55 to my new 90 without any death!

No regrets with this pump- this thing is AWESOME! I love being able to easily control the flow. Its quiet too!

the clear tube is 3/4'' return line, the grey hose is the drain & this sump is a pain! One of the glass dividers is cracked- I tried using some old silicone that I had at the house and it never set up. Huge mess.

The ugly stand- can't complain for a free tank/stand though!

Sir MAXIMUS! I got him yesterday from Rucker32.

Where's the noise coming from? At/from the overflow or down at the sump level? What kind/style of standpipe do you have in the overflow?

Is the noise coming from the water splashing into the sump, or is it inside the drain hose?

Both the splashing and the drain hose. The Noise is coming from the water rushing into the sump with lots of air. The grey hose i'm using may also be contributing to the noise as the water goes through it. Is there a way to separate the air out of it into a full stream or any other ideas how to make it quiet?

My overflow up top is very quiet. water hugs the walls of the overflow box and there is a durso-like pvc pipe that aqueon made which is almost silent. The noise is really coming from the air and water rushing through that grey ribbed spa tubing and then the bubbles and water rushing into the water that is already in the sump.

I just removed one of the dividers because the glass was broken. I'm thinking about removing them both and putting in acrylic because the glass is rough and keeps slicing my hands when I get near it!

Is your overflow way oversized? Maybe try feeding a piece of airline tubing into it to allow air to escape.

Does the drain hose stop above or below the sump water level? There's nothing wrong with submerging it; that should help a lot.

Do you have your drain line submerged at all. Sometimes if it is submerged it will build up back pressure and it will fill until pressure lets it push the water out of it.

The grey tubing is too long and i had it sitting at the bottom of the sump under 6'' of water. I tried it at surface level and half way and it was still noisy. I'll try the airline tubing and see what comes of it. I need to place a new baffle/separator in that sump.

Run a bead of silicone across the top of the sharp baffle, or use some sandpaper to smooth it.out

i'll try the sandpaper right now. I need to buy new silicone, the old stuff I had didn't set up and it made a huge mess when I tried fixing that broken baffle!

The noise inside the hose will sometimes subside once a slime coat builds up. But it sounds like your issues are beyond that. I have all of my drain hoses about 2" below the water line.

90 degree elbow in your down pipe will slow the water down before it crashes into your sump. That is my tried and true method for reducing sump noise, if your overflows are quiet and it's just the crashing water into your sump you need to slow the water down, 90 deg bends or adjusting a ball value to reduce the flow is really your only methods of reducing noise.

Thanks, I'll give these suggestions a try and see if I can get this thing to whisper. Any suggestions on moving the livestock of the 55 to the 90? What would you guys move first, last, things to look out for, mistakes you have made in the past, things you wish you would have done?
