my new tank!

This is my second marine tank. I had to move with the army, so i decided to start fresh. This is a temp setup, when i move in about 6 months all livestock will be moved into a larger 125 or 180 and this will become my coral prop tank. Let me know if you see any problems. I plan on keeping some sps, lps, calms, and a few softies. First of all my tank is a glasscages.com custom 42g 24x24x17 rr. I plan on using a 20 high as my custom sump as it is also 24 long and i already have some glass cut that will fit it. Im just going to use one set of baffles to divide the skimmer and the return. For lights i have a single 250w, icecap retro with a coralife se reflector. I wont be using any type of actinics, so i am thinking of going with either an aqualine 13k or a hamilton 14k bulb. My skimmer came off my last tank. It is an aquax remora, and i was very happy with the results although i would rather have an urchin so i could put it in my sump. Maybe ill put it in the trade posts to see is someone wants to swap. My return is a previously owned mag 3. I have heard it is good to have a slow flow through the sump and a faster closed loop. For the cl i am thinking a mag 5, 7, or 9. I need to figure out what speed pump i will need for my chiller when i get a larger tank so i can re use this pump for that. I will be getting aroud 30-35 lbs of live base rock, and over the next few months continue to add more peice by peice as i can afford more. Also i want a nice deep live sand bed. This may mean using dead sand and seeding it, or if i get a good deal i will just get all live. For my cleanup crew i am debating the whole hermit or hermitless tank approach. If i do they will all be scarlets. Thats all i have planned for now, let me know what everyone thinks. Is this to much light for such a shallow tank? To much for just the softies? Any other suggestions? Thanx in advance,
Steve

I have had two of the Hamilton 14k bulbs die within a few months of use, so I'm skeptical about them for the moment. They look nice to my eyes, though.

I think most soft corals will adapt to your MH, but the lamp should work nicely for a lot of stony corals.

If you're going to have live rock, IMO I wouldn't spend the xtra money on live sand. It will become live on its own over time. Hermits are ok scavengers. But I'd add a little variety with maybe some cerith, nassarius, or turbo snails as well. Good luck. BTW, how's life in the Garden City these days?
